A Dog's Life | Pooch Pampering in Melbourne

From cafe's catering for a pooches dietary requirements to store's that sell doggy bags full of nutritious goodies as well as a new wardrobe for the season; Melbourne's dog-friendly services are popping up quickly around town. Man's best friend couldn't ask for more and neither can its human counterpart.

Gone are the days when dog owners travel around the city in search of an appropriate grooming brush or a good clipper. Times have since evolved. Today's pooch can have a busy schedule with its owner, anywhere from a manicure and pedicure one day, to a doggy day spa the next and another outing in search of the perfect winter attire to brave the cold.

In 2004, Kristy Andruszko opened her first Puppy Phat store in Daylesford to cater for the only child in her life, Nissans. Her pet dog and his K-9 friends are treated to doggy-style treats ranging from pupalatte's, poochinio's, moch-choc drinks, petit fours, doggy doughnuts and doggy biscotti to name a few of the many popular treats in her ever-popular stores popping up around Melbourne, not to mention the array of 'beauty' products, clothing line and other doggy bits and pieces sold in the Puppy Phat stores.

Newport company, Happy Yappers bakes doggy treats and sells their products in 180 stores. Owners Milly Parker and chef Tony Panetta use 'human-grade' ingredients including peanut butter, garlic and real stock, with many products garnished with roasted seafood. Even the four-legged kind is treated to a Japanese indulgence once in a while.

Bear in mind that it's not only kids who are lactose intolerant. Wendy Patton, owner of the Albert Park store Pets and the City serves 'doggie-chinos' using lactose-free milk and served in little silver bowls.

Humanising the pet lifestyle is the underlying philosophy behind The Paws Store in Seddon. This lifestyle boutique provides unique and high quality pet accessories for the pampered pooch, the sophisticate and pet people. Owners Sarah Seddon and Marc Fernando offer fashion faux paws advice with unique ensembles, dining accessories, grooming and beauty products and much more.

With Melbourne's weather hopefully on the rise, whoever said that cafe's were only for humans? Carousel at Albert Park lake is a great pit stop, so too is My Dog Cafe at Station Pier in Port Melbourne. At the latter cafe, dogs are treated to a menu that received considerable research in not only providing doggy dishes that were tasty but also nutritious. There are a handful of choices with all dishes at 120 grams and a low $5.

If you and you dog are pooched out after a day of shopping and sipping latte's then treat your best friend to a full wash, clip, blow-dry, cologne and all-over maintenance at HydroDog.
