The inaugural eight teams of the AFLW were Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, GWS and Fremantle. The league expanded to 10 teams in season three, 14 in season five, and all 18 in season seven.

The AFLW grand final has been held since the first AFLW season in 2017 (no 2020 Grand Final - covid). There was no finals series in the first two seasons.
