Damien Chazelle's 2016 musical La La Land was set in the present but looked back at old Hollywood with misty-eyed nostalgia. Now, his epic account of the last days of silent cinema fills in the seamier side of the picture, postulating that decadence was built into the system from the outset and that the excesses of the 21st century have nothing on those of the Jazz Age. Regular Chazelle collaborator Justin Hurwitz supplies the soundtrack, while Brad Pitt as a hard-partying leading man and Margot Robbie as a starlet on the make lead the requisite cast of thousands.
