Barwon Park Mansion

Barwon Park Mansion

Imposing bluestone mansion built in the 1860s for Thomas Austin, its first owner. The property comprised 12,000 hectares, and was noted for its sheep and horses.

Barwon Park was built by Thomas Austin, and completed in 1871. A magnificent building which has had much restoration work, it is open to visitors twice a week and well worth a visit.

Barwon Park is also the venue for occasional special functions and can even be hired for weddings and similar events

Barwon Park is on the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Register with a State Classification.

Barwon Park visitors are rewarded with a vision from the past. Once one of Australia's grandest mansions, it was designed by architects Davidson & Henderson and built 1869 - 1871 of bluestone for Thomas and Elizabeth Austin.

The interior remains largely in original condition and features the striking central staircase which resonates with the glory of Victoria's pastoral heritage. One of the features of Barwon Park is the extensive use of early Australian cedar.

A popular venue for concerts, weddings, and military re-enactments.

Imagine cleaning it: all 42 rooms! House and adjacent stables in original condition, faithfully restored. Features delicate ironwork over the entrance and verandah, a grand staircase, stained glass windows, and interior arches on the upper floors.

Owned by the Austins, who built it, and then Batsons, who bequeathed it to the National Trust.

Thomas Austin is renowned for introducing the rabbit to Australia; his wife Elizabeth, for founding the Austin Hospital.
