Big Bird Trail - Mount Martha

Big Bird Trail - Mount Martha

Home of the coolest trail on the Mountain of Martha! BIG BIRD Trail is great fun for strava running geeks, a trail from the beach that takes in spectacular scenery along single trails with challenging obstacles. BIRD is the WORD !

A joyous trail of fun and frivolity!! Beautiful rural streets, stunning estuary meanderings, subtle light drifting through the native forests and trees... Tranquil, accessible & delightful. I would do it over and over if i had the chance.

Melbourne runners are passing the time during lockdown by passing a rubber chicken between their 5km bubbles. Attached to a Garmin watch and a bottle of hand sanitiser, the toy rubber chicken has been used as a relay baton for a race around the Mornington Peninsula.

Since residents couldn't exercise further than 5km from home, Safety Beach local Peter Mitchell decided to keep his running group going by turning their 9km run around Mount Martha's Big Bird trail into a community relay.

"During lockdown we were only allowed to run in ones or twos so we decided to run in a relay," Mr Mitchell said. "Around 20 of us took part and we ended up running 130km between us over 13 hours."

Runners started near their home and made their way to the next runner's 5km bubble, passing along the rubber chicken each time and getting as many locals involved as possible.

Mr Mitchell said the relay has grown beyond the Peninsula, with the rubber chicken making it all the way to the other side of Melbourne.

"We thought if someone keeps running with it we can keep going around Victoria," Mr Mitchell said. "It brings a lot of joy to a lot of people ... the amount of people who got behind it was amazing. We currently have 100 lockdown bubbles involved."

The rubber bird has flown all the way to Yarraville and has even seen the Dandenong Ranges.
