Information
Mikhail Aleksandrovich Chekhov (Russian: Михаил Александрович Чехов, August 29, 1891 in Moscow - September 30, 1955 in Beverly Hills, California) was an Academy Award-nominated Russian - American actor, director, author, and developer of his own acting technique used by actors such as Client Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Yul Brynner, and Robert Stack.
Chekhov was considered by Konstantin Stanislavsky to be one of his brightest students. He was one of a handful of proteges of Stanislavsky who both embraced and rebelled against the theories and practices of Stanislavsky. Mikhail believed Stanislavsky's techniques led too readily to a naturalistic style.
Between 1936 and 1939 Chekhov established The Chekhov Theatre School at Dartington Hall, in Devon, England and in 1938 his school moved to Connecticut, where it took up residence of an old boarding school, giving its first diplomas in 1939.
Noted actors Jack Nicholson, while receiving his 1999 Golden Globe Award, and Anthony Hopkins, on "Inside the Actors Studio", both acknowledged the power of Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture. Today, the Chekhov techniques are gaining world-wide recognition in an amazing expansion of interest as artists seek to discover a consistent means to peak states of performance.
