Darebin Pubs by Bicycle |
A ride exploring the pubs of Darebin and their part in the cultural and political development of Melbourne's inner North. Some you will know, but many may surprise you!
If you have a spare three hours you can ride along the bike trails, quiet roads and cycle lanes and finish up at one of the pubs for lunch and a couple of beers.
This type of tour only requires average to moderate fitness.
Some pubs on the itinerary could include:
Peacock Inn 210 High Street Northcote.
Commercial Hotel 301 High Street Northcote, est 1854. In 1891 it was the meeting place of the Trades Hall Progressive Political League which played a part in the formation of the ALP.
Croxton Park Hotel 607 High Street, Thornbury est 1844. In the 1870's the hotel had a race track and grandstand at the rear and played host to international athletics meetings, pigeon shooting and deer hunting.
Olympic Hotel 27 Albert Street, Preston est 1955. Names after the 1956 Olympic Games. The owners were forced to remove their distinctive rings by the Australian Olympic Committee in 2005.
Junction Hotel 1 Plenty Road, Preston est 1861. Prospered in the 1860's as a way station for the Cobb and Co Stage Coach.
Grandview Hotel 429 Heidelberg Road, Fairfield est 1888. The only Darebin Hotel to have had a runaway camel in its main bar.
Pack : Puncture kit, water, sunscreen, sunglasses etc
Grade : Easy/moderate approximately 3 hours / 30km duration using bike lanes & paths with time for stops along the way.
