Ding Dong Lounge |
The recently renovated and rebooted Ding Dong Lounge.
Known as Melbourne's underground & alternative rock'n roll bar that delivered live eclectic local, national & international rock, hip-hop & electro.
With the success of Cherry (Melbourne's first CBD rock'n'roll bar) comes The Ding Dong Lounge - the sister bar to New York City's very own of the same name.
The Ding Dong Lounge is filling the void in Melbourne's rock'n'roll scene - sure we got the venues and plenty of bands that want the limelight, but now comes a mid-sized venue that can be your after work drinking hole or a place to see some of the scene's best local and international bands.
Ding Dong Lounge to Close
The much-loved CBD rock venue has just a few weeks left.
Ding Dong Lounge - one of the CBD's last remaining rock venues - is closing in January 2018.
'It's an open secret that venues in the Melbourne CBD have been struggling lately due in part to the broader proliferation of similar clubs and bars across the inner north,' said owner Billy Walsh in a statement.
He adds that the 'heartbreaking homeless[ness] issue and ongoing late-night violence in the CBD' is also part of the issue
Walsh was a founder of Cherry Bar, although he sold his shares in 2012 to take sole ownership of DDL, in which he has had shares since 2003. He was also the original drummer of hard-rock band Cosmic Psychos.
Legendary acts such as Queens of the Stone Age, the White Stripes and Leonard Cohen have all graced the stage at DDL, but importantly it also hosted locals in the infancies of their careers, such as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
While it's still possible to see live rock at venues such as Max Watts or 170 Russell, these venues are too large to support up-and-coming local bands. The loss of a small band room like Ding Dong Lounge is a sad day for Melbourne music.
The Ding Dong Lounge's last night of service will be January 13, 2018.
