Yarraville locals are calling it Dinosaur Park where you will find the fabulous Mimi the Muttaburrasaurus. Mimi is a 3m tall by 6m wide dinosaur playground activity located in McNish Reserve.
The dinosaur has a ropes course, rock-climbing holds and a dinosaur egg-shaped cubby with eggshells that can be used as seats. The prehistoric creature has been modelled on the Muttaburrasaurus that lived in Australia 32 million years ago.
The dinosaur was a herbivore and considered to be uniquely Australian. The skeleton was found in Queensland in the 1960s and named after the town of Muttaburra.
Medibank approached Maribyrnong Council with plans to build a $100,000 playground as part of its Generation Better campaign. Mayor Grant Miles said it would offer children a unique play experience not found anywhere else in Melbourne.
The playground was made by local artists from the BiGfiSh Workshop.
The dinosaur will appeal to the imagination of kids of all ages but the actual dinosaur itself is more suitable for toddlers and above. It can only be accessed by a rope ladder or the footholds embedded in the dinosaur's legs and as such, Baby 2.0 couldn't get up without assistance. Once inside the belly of the dinosaur you can climb up to the head and roar like a dinosaur using the megaphone, or take a slippery slide out through the dinosaur's tail!
So popular, the opening of the playground in September 2014 was featured on the nightly TV news.
Book | Playing outside is the BEST
A children's book about the dinosaur's outdoor adventures has been published and shared with local schools to further encourage imaginative outside play and invite kids down to the playground.
Melbourne illustrator, Annie Davidson, illustrated the storybook about the Muttaburrasaurus entitled 'Playing outside is the BEST!'.
The book aims to bring the dinosaur to life and to keep young children interested in spending time outdoors. Copies can be found in local Medibank retail stores and selected community cafes and organisations.
