Discover South Melbourne |
South Melbourne originated in 1855 and was one of Melbourne's first shopping strips. Originally known as Emerald Hill, because the hill on which the town hall now stands was a green island surrounded by swamps.
The name change was due to the fact that the attachment to Melbourne gave the area international recognition and this was required to precure loans from London to develop infrastructure.
Today the historic characteristics are still evident and the town has evolved into a vibrant shopping and business centre with a friendly village atmosphere.

The South Melbourne Business Association established in 2003, is a non - profit organisation overseen by local business people who have a business in the precinct and are passionate about the area.
