Edinburgh Gardens

Edinburgh Gardens

One of Yarra's largest parks at 24 hectares, Edinburgh Gardens is located in the heart of North Fitzroy.

Every weekend there is something happening in the gardens, whether it be a BBQ, group get-together, kick to kick of the footy, skate board riding, meeting point for the Naked Bike Ride, you name it, Edinburgh Gardens has it all..

Edinburgh Gardens has barbeques, tennis courts, a basketball court, playground and sports field.

History

Edinburgh Gardens were designed by Clement Hodgkinson who also designed many of Melbourne's other parks including Fitzroy Gardens and Treasury Gardens.

Established in 1862 the gardens includes the historic W.T. Peterson Community Oval (Brunswick Street Oval), Fitzroy Bowling Club, Fitzroy Memorial Rotunda (1925) and believe it or not, a spur of the former Inner Circle Railway once bisected the gardens. Some sections of the old track are still visible through the park. Level crossings were retained when the tracks were removed. The old line has been replaced with a shared path that joins the Linear Park Reserve and leads to the nearby Capital City Trail.

Edinburgh Gardens is the former home of Fitzroy Football Club. Games were played from 1883 on the sportsground now known as W.T Peterson Community Oval. The grandstand surrounding the oval dates back to the late-19th century. Other historical features include a stone drinking fountain, period park light fittings, a rotunda and war memorial.

You'll find plenty of open lawn areas, shady and sheltered spots, structural formal avenue plantings and a pathway network connecting the surrounding networks and park facilities. Edinburgh Gardens is easily accessible by public transport, with Brunswick Street bordering the west side of the park.

It also provides access to the Main Yarra Trail.

In August 2010, a new playground was opened in the park. The playground includes a climbing spider net and large chalk boards for children to draw on. It is complemented by a new picnic table and double BBQ.
