Fawkner Park
Fawkner Park is named after Melbourne co-founder, the Hon. John Pascoe Fawkner, was created in 1862 comprising 100 Acres (40 Hectares).
In the 1890s sections of the park were set aside for up to ten different sporting activities, ranging from golf to football, so people strolling in the park could witness all these activities in a localised area.
Today the layout of the park remains substantially unchanged from its nineteenth century design, when it was developed as a park for promenading.
Fawkner Park caters for a wide range of sporting and leisure activities for people from the local and regional area. Sports include cricket, softball, football, tennis, and rugby. The features of the park include sports grounds and pavilions, tennis courts, children's playgrounds and a community centre.
The parkland is gently sloping to flat, with grassed, irregularly shaped, open fields edged by tree-lined pathways. The park is trapezoidal in shape, with its longest diagonal approximately 1.0 km in length.
The many straight pathways that crisscross the park are lined with avenues of elm, oak and Moreton Bay fig trees. Plantings in the park include a mix of native and exotic trees.
