Friends of Boroondara (Kew) Cemetery

The Friends of Boroondara (Kew) Cemetery was formed in 2006 to raise awareness and share with all those interested in history the rich heritage contained in this beautiful cemetery.

Since then we have conducted many and varied tours in all sorts of weathers. We also hold public meetings with the occasional guest. These meetings are open to both our members and also the general public. We have published one book (now sold out) and are about to launch an all new one - hopefully very soon. We actively pursue grants where eligible and have used these funds to print our first book and also several self-guided tours of the cemetery which are available from the cemetery office. We are available to private groups on weekends or during the week for tours - check our contact details for further information.

We have identified the following aims for our group:

Research the historical significance and national importance of the Cemetery.
Research all aspects of the Cemetery and the lives of those interred there.
Liaise with institutions, interested groups, and descendants.
Conduct public and private tours and talks about the Cemetery.
Raising funds, including applying for appropriate grants in order to contribute to particular restoration projects in the Cemetery.
Share and make available research materials and information between the public, all FOBKC members, the Cemetery Trustees and interested stakeholders for their personal use.
Hold regular meetings to discuss issues relating to the Cemetery and cemetery issues in general.

In line with our Aims and Objectives we undertake the following activities:

Conducting regular tours and walks through the Cemetery.
Locating the graves for descendants upon request.
Researching the lives of those interred at the Cemetery, keeping records relating to such and making these records available to the general public.
Holding regular public meetings whereby items of interest relating to the Cemetery or cemeteries in general and other related matters can be discussed.
Attending historical or community events, give talks to community groups in the interests of publicising FOBKC and the Cemetery.
Raising funds by applying for appropriate grants to produce newsletters, brochures, books etc. about the Cemetery.
The main source of income for FOBKC is from membership fees, tours, grants and donations.
We also produce literature and have won awards for our publications - most recently for our self guided tour brochures.
