Gusto Films ran this cinema from June 2013 until February 2014, until the new owners (property developers) failed to renew our lease on reasonable terms so had no choice but to leave.
It was a risk that this would eventuate but it was a risk worth taking and we loved bringing cinema back to The George - even if it was for only six months.
We would really like to thank the lovely locals, Friends of George and regular patrons who supported this cinema from the outset. We just wish it could have been longer!
If we find a new space to run a cinema, we will be sure to let you know.
POP UP 2014
The word on Fitzroy street is that the cinema doors remain closed and the inside of the cinema remains as we left it with the developers unsure on what to do....
What a shame for the regulars & locals who loved having their cinema back!
However, our pop up cinema, Blow Up Cinema continues to find great venues to show films in and to work with organisations to bring films into cool spaces. Buster Keaton at the Thornbury Theatre, The World Cup in a city warehouse, Breakfast at Tiffany's in a bluestone church in Footscray and future festival screenings for our short film, Junked.
