Heathcote is situated on the Northern Highway 110 km, an easy one and a half hours drive, north of Melbourne. With a population of about 3500 it is a thriving town. Heathcote is also the gateway north to Bendigo and Echuca, and boasts one of the best Fishing lakes in Victoria. Lake Eppalock with its many boat ramps makes it also a perfect place for boating of all kinds. Lake Eppalock also supports the Bendigo Yacht Club, who regularly hold regattas on the lake. The Lake also boasts some very good catches of Yellow Belly (Golden Perch), Trout, Redfin and Murray Cod.
The town was first named McIvor, after a gold prospector who arrived here in 1853, the town prospered during the 1850's to 1860's but declining gold discoveries caused the population to decline by the 1880's.
