Herne Hill 3218 |
Herne Hill is a residential suburb 3 km. west-north-west of Geelong.
Herne Hill was a suburb of the former Geelong West municipality, and before then was a district situated between Geelong West and Fyansford. Early institutions in the district were the Western Cemetery, the Geelong Orphan Asylum (1855, later acquired by the Australian Portland Cement Company) and the "Clonard"residence (1855, later a convent and Catholic college).
Herne Hill has the Western Heights Secondary College (originally Geelong West technical school, 1954) and five reserves, one being beside the Barwon River. It has small shopping areas in Church and Autumn Streets. The Herne Hill primary school (1954) is in neighbouring Hamlyn Heights.
Herne Hill's median house price in 1987 was $58,250 and in 1996 it was $90,750, slightly above the middle range for the Geelong district.
Herne Hill had a census population of 112 in 1911.
