Melbourne's two islands are both in the Yarra River...
Coode Island
Melbourne's most famous island, Coode Island is man-made and one of our oldest. It was formed in 1886 when a canal was cut through the Sandridge swamp to provide a straightened riverflow for the Yarra River.
Coode Island has its own post code (3003) and while it is uninhabited (no-one lives there) is does have transport companies, cargo storage, bulk (non-liquid) storages and port facilities.

Herring Island
Herring Island is a lovely island accessible only by boat, 3.2 hectares in size and just 3 km from the city. Named after the patron of Scouts, Sir Edmund Herring it is now managed by Parks Victoria.
