Remembrance: Jill Meagher Peace March

Remembrance: Jill Meagher Peace March

Sunday 30th September 2012 - Local Brunswick residents have organised for a peace march to honour the late Jill Meagher.

Organisers say the march will bring the local community together to protest against violence after the 29-year-old Irish national was allegedly raped and killed following a night out with friends at a Brunswick bar last week.

The march down Sydney Road will begin at midday (AEST) at the corner of Moreland Road and continue down to Brunswick Road.

Jill Meagher Peace March

Today, I walked for peace with an estimated 10,000 Melburnian's.

Mums, dads, brothers, sisters, boys and girls, dogs, bicycles were all there. Quiet, sombre, respectful we marched in a southerly direction from Moreland Road to Brunswick Road. Past the Duchess Boutique where thousands of flowers have been left to remember the last sighting of Jill. Past the Baptist Church where another memorial to Jill has been created. Past the two bars where she spent her last few hours.

Red HelmetTelevision helicopters hovered overhead as the march wound its way down the hill.

Thank you Melbourne, and thank you to those who marched, it reminded me why I call myself a proud Melburnian.

R.I.P. Jill!

Rest in Peace Jill

The 20m mural, created by a mystery street artist on Sunday, stretches along the Forum Theatre in Hosier Lane and reads: Rest in Peace Jill.
