Kill Your Darlings |
Kill Your Darlings is an independent Australian magazine of culture and society.
Kill Your Darlings, a dynamic and vibrant platform for new and challenging cultural commentary, is one of Australia's fastest growing literary magazines.
Founded in Melbourne by Rebecca Starford and Hannah Kent in 2009, Kill Your Darlings (KYD) is one of Australia's most lively and entertaining cultural magazines.
Our name comes from a quote regularly attributed to the American novelist William Faulkner: 'In writing, you must kill all your darlings.' Strong editorial values drive KYD. Our editors are passionate about the integrity of the writer and their ideas, and in the past nine years KYD has shown a commitment to writing that is insightful, generates discussion and tests boundaries.
KYD embraces both high- and low-brow culture, and publishes commentary, essays, fiction, interviews and reviews - Our contributors include established and celebrated literary identities alongside new and emerging talent, such as Benjamin Law, Clementine Ford, Jane Caro, Ron Rash, Antony Loewenstein, Chris Womersley, Rebecca Shaw, Gideon Haigh, Krissy Kneen, Amy Espeseth, Maria Turmarkin, Jennifer Down, Omar Musa, Toni Jordan, Jack Cowell, Melanie Joosten and Jon Bauer. For a full list of contributors, please click here.
In 2017, KYD ceased publishing our flagship quarterly print magazine in order to focus our attention on our rapidly growing online publishing program. In addition to championing Australian writers, KYD also produces a regular podcast, provides professional writing services such as workshops and manuscript assessments, and hosts literary events to foster engagement and discussion between writers and readers.
Our magazine is proudly independent. You can become a member from as little as $17.50.
Kill Your Darlings is produced primarily on unceded, sovereign Wurundjeri country, and we pay our respects to elders and custodians, past, present and future.
