The City's Public Art Program encourages artists to contribute to enhancing, defining and re-defining its built and natural environment. The Program regularly invites artists to develop and present their ideas for permanent and temporary artworks.

The Laneway Commissions are dedicated to commissioning new temporary art works developed in response to Melbourne's unique laneway topography. These commissions embrace the energy of urban life and promote innovative and significant works.

As an annual program the commissions provide ongoing opportunities for artists, foster creative capacity and strongly advocate the artist profession. This in turn invigorates the city on many levels, leaving distinct and intangible traces of complex projects. The Laneway Commissions encourage artists to expand their practice and communicate their specific ideas and concerns to a larger audience.
