Why Australian TV Has Found Its Next Big Presenter

For years, Australian television has relied on presenters who can move comfortably between entertainment, reality television, live audiences and unscripted moments. Sonia Kruger built a formidable career doing exactly that. Mel Tracina increasingly looks capable of following a similar path.

Tracina's television breakthrough came with Working Dog's The Cheap Seats, where she established herself as the show's cultural correspondent alongside hosts Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald. It proved an ideal showcase: entertainment news delivered with humour, personality and enough self-awareness to prevent celebrity culture becoming too serious.

The major step arrived when Network 10 chose Tracina to host the revived Big Brother Australia.

It was a substantial assignment. Big Brother returned to its original network and Dreamworld home in 2025, restoring the live nominations, live evictions and livestreaming associated with the program's early years. Tracina was not simply fronting another studio format; she was being asked to become the public face of one of Australian reality television's best-known franchises.

She was also an authentic choice. Tracina had watched Big Brother as a fan when it first became a television phenomenon in the early 2000s, giving her a connection to the format beyond the hosting job itself.

Following the 2025 season, 10 confirmed Big Brother would return with Tracina again as host.

A presenter built for modern television

The Sonia Kruger comparison is less about imitation than versatility.

Tracina can handle entertainment reporting, comedy, reality television, radio and live presentation without appearing to switch into a different personality for each job. Her appeal comes from seeming interested rather than simply polished. She can be funny without dominating a segment and enthusiastic without tipping into the relentless cheerfulness that often dates television presenting.

She also understands pop culture from the inside. On The Cheap Seats, reality television, celebrity news and internet oddities are not subjects she treats with embarrassment or distance. That makes her particularly well suited to a television landscape in which the boundaries between traditional broadcasting, social media and entertainment culture have largely disappeared.

Australian television is always searching for hosts who can carry a major format while still feeling recognisably themselves.
