Best Ice Cream & Gelato in Melbourne

Melbourne BEST icecream eateries..

Melbourne's got itself a great range of fine ice cream and gelato purveyors, and we just seem to be adding more and more to the list. So, as you swelter under the Melbourne sun, check out Melbourne's best ice cream and gelato.

While there will always be a soft spot in our hearts for corner store Paddle Pops and Golden Gaytimes, it's hard to pass up hand-churned gelato from one of Melbourne's many boutique vendors.

CREAM OF THE CROP

Our first Best of Melbourne poll of the year has gelatarias licked

WhenN we asked you to tell us your favourite Melbourne spots to scoop up an ice cream treat, your answers really made us melt.

You nominated loads of locations from every corner of the city and even the furthest suburbs, and served up thousands of votes.

Scoring a place in the top 10 is the cherry on top for the winners of our first "Best of Melbourne" poll for 2020.

1 SPRINKLES ICE CREAMERY LOLLIES N MORE
170 Thames Blvd, Tarneit 3029 - 0405 295 713

Zane and Kouda Assaad know a thing or two about making customers happy - after all, the brothers grew up living and working in a milk bar, for 25 years.

After their father retired Zane and Kouda pursued careers in finance. But a couple of years ago they had a calling: "We wanted to bring back those simple joys from our generation, you know, when you used to ride your bike to the local milk bar."

The pair found an old rundown milk bar in Tarneit and, on January 27 two years ago, Sprinkles Ice Creamery Lollies N More opened its doors.

A huge range of lollies are on offer, along with more than 60 ice cream flavours. According to the owners, their most popular offering is "rainbow, Ferrero Rocher and rock salt caramel" .

2 PARADISE GELATO
247 Charman Rd, Cheltenham 3192 - 0478 033 663

Paradise Gelato owners Joyce Ng and Andi Lee pride themselves as much on their customer service as their product.

The Charman Rd store, which has attracted a strong following since opening in October 2018, offers 10 rotating flavours, freshly made each day.

Ms Ng said cookies and cream was the most popular flavour among younger customers, "followed by the pink one and the yellow one" .

3 THE YARD BY THE BAY
1595 Nepean Hwy, Capel Sound 3940 - (03) 5912 2506

Just six weeks after opening on the seafront, this family business has already garnered a big following.

Frank Faro, who opened The Yard with daughters Alicia De Thomasis and Isabella, son Jamie and wife Toni, proudly says their gelati is made with "100 per cent flavour" - and as they are in a popular area for walkies, some flavours are just for dogs.

4 LAVEZZI GELATARIA
334 Lygon St, Carlton 3053 - (03) 9347 1462

When you've got fourthgeneration gelato makers hailing from Italy making your sweet treats, you know it has to be good. And fans of Lavezzi Gelateria know they're onto a winner. The team opened their first store in Ringwood in 2015, but it was a dream come true to open their shop in Lygon St two years ago.

Owner Amanda Sperlinga said they prided themselves on good service and the bestquality gelato.

5 BRAZEN DESSERT BAR
141A Station St, Fairfield 3078 - (03) 9486 1415
661A High Street, Kew East 3102 - +61412662233

Dessert fans young (right) and old are flocking to this business run by an ex-lawyer and an ex-banker .

Husband and wife George Kalpakis and Caroline Kropack turned their back on corporate life to make brownies.

That turned into ice cream, and now also includes coffee.

Why? "Because we love dessert," Mr Kalpakis says. "We would think about dessert before we think about dinner, breakfast, lunch - it's crazy."

6 MADAME SPAGHETTI
40 Crockford St, Port Melbourne 3207 - 0466 466 803

The signature dish here - spaghetti gelato - is not your average treat. Madame Spaghetti opened last June last year and has quickly gained a cult following.

German-born owner Mascha Welk says spaghetti gelato is big back home, with vanilla "spaghetti" , and strawberry sauce and white chocolate flakes resembling tomato sauce with parmesan.

7 OKAY LUCY
SHOP G02/786 Esplanade, Mornington 3931

The newest gelataria in Mornington (main picture, above) is better than OK. There are more than 60 flavours on daily rotation and a busy Nutella tap. Stevie Dellamarta and Pete Romaniw opened up just seven weeks ago on the Esplanade opposite Mornington Park, determined to create "an experience, not just a transaction" for their many satisfied customers.

8 AUGUSTUS GELATERY
15A PASCOE STREET PASCOE VALE 3044 - (03) 9306 8341

Named after the rather piggish Charlie and the Chocolate Factory character Augustus Gloop, this place really is a glutton's delight.

Decked out in Willy Wonka-esque colours and with a vivid range of gelato in the custom-made , Italianimported 7m-long cabinets to match, Augustus Gelatery has been wowing customers since it opened three years ago.

A team of four gelati chefs, most with Italian backgrounds, churn out fresh batches each day at the bigger Essendon shop, with 36 rotating flavours on the menu.

9 VULCANO GELATO
2387 Point Nepean Road, Rye 3941 - 5985 8656

At the height of summer in this prime holiday location, it's normal for Vulcano Gelato to have a queue halfway around the block - from midday to midnight. And it's not surprising, given the Rye shop's secret recipe has its roots on beautiful Vulcano island off Sicily in Italy.

With business always booming, co-owner Josephine Colombo says they have 42 rotating flavours, a separate freezer offering 20 vegan, gluten and nut-free flavours, and a dark chocolate, sugarfree offering.

10 GELATO PAPA
14a Gilbert Rd, Preston 3072 - (03) 9480 5776

When Lilly Stuckings' neighbours have an overabundance of produce in their gardens, they know exactly who to call.

From bursting fig and lemon trees to overgrown herb patches, it's guaranteed their talented friend will be able to turn their homegrown delights into delicious ice cream.

Mrs Stuckings is a secondgeneration gelato maker, whose Sicilian family have made the treat for more than 40 years.

Gelato Papa serves 16 flavours, including about five changing specials.
