Melbourne Dribblers Set Australian Record

7 April 2009 | DRIBBLERS SET AUSTRALIAN RECORD

The basketball community was out in force in Melbourne's Federation Square today as 1,623 people came out to break the Australian record for people dribbling basketballs simultaneously.

The event, which also served as the official launch of Australia's new national basketball branding and the announcement of the legendary Larry Sengstock as Basketball Australia's new Chief Executive Officer, was adjudged a resounding success despite the numbers falling short of the targeted world record.

Melbourne's iconic Federation Square rang with the sound of bouncing balls as members of the Opals, Boomers, Gliders and Rollers national teams urged the participants on.

The total figure of 1,623 participants easily was the largest ever in Australia and also surpassed the old world record of 1,289 people set on 17 May 2007 in Edinburgh.

It fell just short however of the new mark recently recognised by Guinness World Records of 3,054, which was set during an event organised by the Indiana Pacers NBA team to mark the start of the basketball season in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, on 28 October 2007.

The event was hosted by Channel Seven celebrity Mark Beretta and included the unveiling by Minister for Youth and Sport, the Hon. Kate Ellis MP, of basketball's new unified branding.
