Melbourne is out of this world

It can truly be said "Melbourne is out of this world"

We do love a bit of Melbourne trivia and this Marissa Calligeros article that appeared in theage.com.au in June 2015 hit the mark.

'G'day' from space: Astronaut snaps Melbourne from International Space Station

The man-made marvels of the MCG, Flemington Racecourse and Rod Laver Arena have featured in a photograph snapped by NASA astronaut Scott Kelly aboard the International Space Station.

Commander Kelly posted the photo to Twitter from the International Space Station, where he is nearly three months into a one-year mission with Russian counterpart Mikhail Kornienko.

The American astronaut marvelled at Australia's beauty when he soared above the nation's red centre on April 6, 2015.

Commander Kelly is honing his photography skills, snapping numerous cities from above as he orbits the globe.

He often posts photographs to Twitter and asks his followers to name the city or country in a geography trivia game he calls Space Geo.The 51-year-old astronaut and engineer is a retired US navy captain. A veteran of three previous missions, Commander Kelly was selected in November 2012 for the special year-long mission at the space station.

On this mission, he is tasked with collecting scientific data to help NASA better understand how the human body is affected by being in space.

His identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, is a former astronaut. The Kelly brothers are the only siblings to have travelled in space.

Commander Kelly's shots are reminiscent of those taken by Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield who gained fame for a series of incredible photos posted to social media.

Commander Kelly and cosmonaut Kornienko farewelled International Space Station crew members Terry Virts, Anton Shkaplerov and Samantha Cristoforetti this week.

The trio landed in Kazakhstan on Thursday.

The return of the crew from the $US100 billion, 15-nation space station had been delayed for a month after a rocket failed to deliver a Progress cargo craft on April 28. It harmlessly fell into the Pacific Ocean in early May.

Commander Kelly and Kornienko will be on their own until at least July 23, when cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA's Kjell Lindgren and Japan's Kimiya Yui are due to join them.
