As part of the exhibition Medieval to Metal, the Art Gallery of Ballarat will showcase acclaimed Sydney artist NELL on Art Screen and the accompanying lightboxes in Alfred Deakin Place.
NELL's multidisciplinary practice pits iconography against societal binaries: birth and death, masculine and feminine, western and eastern spirituality and materiality's impermanence.
From a distinctly Australian perspective she references Buddhism, art history, popular culture and rock and roll to create distinctive, playful and insightful artworks.
Two of her video works - QUIET/LOUD and It's a Long Way to the Top (if you wanna Rock and Roll) will be displayed on ARTSCREEN.
In her video work QUIET/LOUD, the artist sits atop an amplifier, peacefully meditating in a robe while guitarist Bec Machine riffs, jumps and struts. NELL's AC/DC homage to It's a Long Way to the Top (if you wanna Rock and Roll), is a near identical rendition of the iconic 1975 tune and music video - with the original bagpipe players featured but an all-female band performing, including the artist herself.
The lightboxes will feature works from NELL's recent series of paintings composed on covers of AC/DC's iconic Back in Black album.
