Major Events Guide


ABC 75th AnniversaryHappy Birthday Aunty! The ABC turns 75 this year and you're all invited to come celebrate at Federation Square's Main Stage this Sunday!

The party kicks off at 10am with guest appearances, competitions, live music, entertainment and the ABC Exhibition Trailer will also be in action, featuring a TV and Radio studio for kids to make their own free disc!


Melbourne International Film FestivalMelbourne International Film Festival celebrates its 56th year, presenting a diverse range of contemporary cinema that includes features, documentaries and short films.

Running till August 12 and with over 300 films due to be screened, approximately 80 percent of the programmed films will be Australian premieres.


Portable Film FestivalThe Portable Film Festival, featuring the best in short film and internet video culture, launches on August 1st this week.

Costing nothing at all to sign up, you can use any portable device such as iPod, Sony PSP, laptop computer or even your mobile phone to download films from this years festival programme.


King Lear - Ian McKellenKing Lear - The Royal Shakespeare Company will be presenting two productions performed in repertory at the Arts Centre - King Lear and also The Seagull.

Featuring the renowned Ian McKellen in the title role of King Lear, these special performances at the State Theatre include free pre-performance talks this Tuesday and Thursday.


Energise Enterprise 07Energise Enterprise 07 is Victoria's premier Small Business Festival, taking place throughout August with a huge range of events, workshops and information sessions and forums.

With over 400 events in metropolitan and regional Victoria to choose from Energise Enterprise 07 has something to offer everyone.


Phantom of the OperaThe Phantom of the Opera, Broadway's longest running musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber has made its triumphant return to Melbourne at the Princess Theatre with Performances selling quickly.

Starring the extraordinary Anthony Warlow in his career defining role, this sweepingly romantic hit is a breathtaking phenomenon not to be missed!


National Ride to Work DayNational Ride To Work Day takes place in October, but this month's your chance to win a double pass for a 5-day Grape Escapade - Taste of the Hunter Valley cycling holiday!

Melbourne PinholeMelbourne Pinhole is an exhibition of the photography of David Tatnall, a resident of Melbourne and a committed conservationist. Instrumental in gaining public support for this cause, his work is on show at the City Library's Gallery.


PrintmakingPrintmaking, on show from August 1st at Jenny Port Gallery, is an exhibition that looks into the current state of printmaking, as shown by Melbourne-based. The works display the union of spirit and mechanics that lies behind printmaking's broad disciplines.


Famous - Karin CattFamous - Karin Catt Portrait Exhibition
This free exhibition presents striking celebrity portraits by high-profile Australian photographer Karin Catt, featuring portraits of celebrities such as Elton John, Muhammad Ali, Yoko Ono and many more iconic faces..

In Other WordsIn Other Words is a theatrical performance that explores the significance of storytelling. Using slide-projected imagery, the production examines how various countries have provided official platforms in which their citizens can speak to their pasts.
