This week, the Melbourne International Film Festival kicks off with an enormous program of fabulous flicks, National Tree Day takes place on Sunday, and the Hume Winter Music Festival offers a festival of its own with an afternoon of Celtic Music in Sunbury, while for a taste of the East there's a belly dancing extravaganza with Azura's Oasis Showcase. Both the Melbourne International Design Festival and State of Design also continue this week.

Major Events Guide
Melbourne International Film Festival, one of Melbourne's most iconic events, begins this Friday with a special opening night screening of Not Quite Hollywood, a documentary that examines the wave of Australian exploitation cinema made during the 70s and 80s. Celebrating its 57th year in 2008, MIFF is one of the oldest film festivals in the world, offering an enormous program of cinema that runs until August 10.
National Tree Day is Australia's biggest community tree planting event when people from all walks of life work together to green up Australia. This Friday will be Schools Tree Day, when all of Australia's school children plant native trees and help beautify their school grounds. Sunday will be National Tree Day with many tree-planting ceremonies and activities taken place throughout the community.
Hume Winter Music Festival is bigger than ever this year with a diverse program of events that are suited for people of all tastes offering food, culture and music.
The Sunbury Celtic Music Festival, held on Sunday as part of the enormous ongoing program, is an afternoon of live Celtic music. The festival within a festival takes place at Sunbury's Victoria University Campus.
Melbourne International Design Festival continues with a bigger program a bigger name to highlight the global influences that have shaped the popular festival. Running until Sunday, the festival features exhibitions, forums, events and public displays. An exciting part of the festival is the Vertical Garden at Melbourne Central, a living installation of greenery that will be on display during the festival.
The State of Design Festival, ending Thursday, offers both local and international conversations that focus on the work of designers across Victoria. During the festival, the best local designers will be honoured through the Premier's Design Awards, while other will be showcased at Design Made Trade, the trade fair of the festival. Award winning designs will also be exhibited at Melbourne Museum.

Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show
Something To Hold Onto, currently showing at Collingwood's Gilligan Grant Gallery, is an exhibition of recent paintings by Hannah Murray. Exploring her own childhood and relationship with her mother, her works are comprised of paintings upon vintage wallpaper.
Derinya Art & Craft Exhibition showcases the talents of emerging and established Victorian and local artists. Opening Friday at Frankston South's Derinya Primary School, the exhibition will feature over 400 artworks that include paintings, jewellery, sculpture and more.
Silent Ruptures, showing at Fitzroy's Centre for Contemporary Photography, coincides with three other exhibitions. The exhibition features images from three photographers in different parts of the world, whose works explore humanity's relation with their surrounds.
The Humanity of Abstract Painting is a major survey exhibition of Diena Georgetti's artworks from the last two decades. Held at the Monash University Museum of Art in Clayton, the exhibition features enigmatic work such as Georgetti's early blackboard paintings.
On the Bowery is an exhibition of installation, photography and paintings that reflect the impressions of three artists who shared a loft on The Bowery, a culturally diverse area of New York. The group show is held at St Kilda's Alliance Francaise Gallery.
I Don't Belong Here But There is the first solo exhibition of Shiau-Peng Chen, commemorating the artist's first year in Melbourne. With paintings and text based artworks that relate her experiences, the show runs at Melbourne gallery, Apartment until Sunday.
Melbourne-SCAPES, an exhibition currently running at Obscura Gallery in St Kilda, combines the work of five photographers and their unique visions of Melbourne. Photos included feature iconic lane-ways, the Docklands precinct and other aspects of Melbourne.
Expos & Open Days
Deer Park Mosque Open Day - This Sunday, the Australian Intercultural Society will present a unique tour of the place of Australian Muslim worship. Traditional finger food and a Q & A session will be offered, along with a workshop on Muslim beliefs.
The Reinvent Your Career Expo offers information on career opportunities, skills matching, and alternative education options for those looking to explore future career paths. It takes place this weekend at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Arts & Theatre
Edward Scissorhands, the hit dance show based on Tim Burton's magical and atmospheric film, will begin playing this Tuesday at the Arts Centre. Directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, who had great success with Swan Lake, shows run until August 3.
Blackbird is an uncompromising but important play that addresses child sexual abuse. Playing at the CUB Malthouse's Beckett Theatre, the play tells the story of Ray, a man who thought he had escaped his past only to find he was very wrong. It runs until August 16.
Flashpoint: New Writing for Theatre, held this Wednesday at the State Library of Victoria, presents three rehearsed readings of winning scripts from the RE Ross Trust Playwrights Awards. Followed by a Q & A session with the playwrights, the event is free.
Hamlet, the latest production by Bell Shakespeare, is a contemporary and poignant interpretation of the infamous tragedy. Featuring Brendan Cowell in the lead role, performances end this week on Tuesday at the Arts Centre.
Thoroughly Modern Millie, the show stopping Broadway musical, is playing until Saturday at Frankston Arts Centre. Based on the award winning film, the stage version includes a full score of new songs and tap numbers in the popular comedy.
The Late Henry Moss, written by the celebrated American playwright Sam Shepherd, is currently playing at Chapel Off Chapel. The play is set in New Mexico where two brothers learn more than they'd expected about their deceased and estranged father.
Adventures Of Butt Boy & Tigger is a raunchy tale of two boys in the world of online chatting, where lines between fantasy and reality between become blurred. Presented by Australia's ongoing gay theatre company, Out Cast Theatre, performances end Saturday.
Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire's novel, is the hit musical that tells the untold story of the legendary witches from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Now playing at the Regent Theatre, the show reveals the surprising past of the supposedly Wicked Witch.
Concert Performances
The Australian String Quartet will be performing this Friday at Collins Street Baptist Church. Held as part of their third national tour, the concert will feature renowned Australian composer Miriam Hyde's string quartet along with Beethoven's opus 131.
Entertainment & Nightlife
Azura's Oasis Showcase is a Bellydance and Bollywood extravaganza featuring Azura and the Shaz-Liks along with special guests. Dazzling and glamorous, there will be two shows only held at Brunswick Uniting Church Hall on Friday and Saturday.
Howlin Time, a band that plays Chicago era blues by musicians such as Hound Dog Taylor and Magic Slim, will be appearing at the Commercial Hotel in Yarraville this Friday. Well-known in Melbourne's music scene, the Chicago blues outfit begin playing at 9pm.
Cinema
Focus on Ozploitation, a special program of films at ACMI, celebrates guilty cinematic pleasures from the 70s and 80s era of Aussie exploitation films. Coinciding with Melbourne International Film Festival, the program includes a screening this Sunday of Turkey Shoot.
Luna Freeze - Luna Park will be making the most of the winter months with Melbourne's newest ice skating venue, held in the middle of Luna Park's Winter Wonderland. With ice-skating set to cool tunes and all under dazzling lights, Luna Freeze runs until October.
Hatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs & Babies is a rare and exciting look at the life of dinosaurs through their eggs, nests and embryos. The exhibition will be at Melbourne Museum with life-like models of hatchlings, illustrations of dinosaur life and stunning photographs.

During a period of Victoria's naive history, long before political correctness, Fitzroy's Labour in Vain Hotel (established in 1853) made emphasis of its title by displaying a sign that showed a white woman trying to wash the black from a black child to no avail.
Not to be outdone, the owner of the nearby Perseverance Hotel erected his own sign, which also emphasised the Hotel's name by displaying the very same picture but with the child growing whiter as it was scrubbed.

During a period of Victoria's naive history, long before political correctness, Fitzroy's Labour in Vain Hotel (established in 1853) made emphasis of its title by displaying a sign that showed a white woman trying to wash the black from a black child to no avail.
Not to be outdone, the owner of the nearby Perseverance Hotel erected his own sign, which also emphasised the Hotel's name by displaying the very same picture but with the child growing whiter as it was scrubbed.
