This week, get in touch with your inner boffin with National Science Week's huge program of events in Victoria and Melbourne, and there's a special re-enactment and celebration of women's rights with The Art of Suff-Rage on Friday. And for those who can't cut the mustard in this week's 40 Hour Famine, there's the Melbourne Specialist Cheese Show held on Sunday. There are also two big Open Days on Sunday with the University of Melbourne and VCA both opening their doors with special presentations and events.

Major Events Guide


National Science WeekNational Science Week begins this Saturday and runs until August 24, offering special events held throughout Victoria and Melbourne including those delivered by universities, schools, museums and science centres. Raising the profile and public interest of science, special events include Living Science at Queen Victoria Market this Sunday, with hands-on activities for kids, forums for adults and food tours.


The Art of Suff-RageThe Art of Suff-Rage is a special free presentation held this Friday that celebrates the life and achievements of Vida Goldstein who worked tirelessly to champion women's rights in Australia and around the world. Artists Ursula Dutkiewicz and Fern Smith bring The Art of Suff-Rage travelling art installation to the steps of the St Kilda Town Hall on Friday where Mayor of the City of Port Phillip will open the event.


World Vision's 40 Hour FamineWorld Vision's 40 Hour Famine takes place this week, running from Friday to Sunday. One of Australia's biggest youth fundraising events, the 40 Hour Famine is a chance to do something real by going without food or something else that really matters to you for 40 hours while also raising money for kids living in poverty overseas. It's also a chance for young Australians to learn what life's like for those going without every day.

Melbourne Writers FestivalMelbourne Writers Festival returns next week, beginning on August 22 to provide ten days of chat, banter and provocation with the world's top writers. One of Melbourne's most popular events, the Writers Festival explores a broad range of literary ideas for people of all backgrounds with more than 250 events that that include guest speakers, author signings, music, debates, fun, games and much more.



Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show


Klippel/KlippelKlippel/Klippel combines the talents of the music composer, Andrew Klippel, and his late father, Robert Klippel, one of Australia's most significant sculptors. Featuring Andrew's audio response to his father's work, it runs at The Ian Potter Centre.


Commemorative Stained Glass WindowsCommemorative Stained Glass Windows, currently exhibiting at the Shrine of Remembrance Visitor Centre, is a collection of sketches, photographs and more that celebrates the wealth of memorials that have been created in this medium. It runs until September 7.


Hue Dares?Hue Dares? is the annual exhibition of the Nell Street Painters, a group of exhibiting artists who are tutored by Nell Frysteen at the Diamond Valley Art Society. Held at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre, the exhibition will run until August 17th.


David RobertsDavid Roberts, known for Large Format Photography, will be exhibiting works at Melbourne's Michael's camera store. Defying digital trends, his photos hold a look seldom seen these days. On August 28, he'll also be providing a free seminar, but bookings are required.


Sport and WarSport and War is an exhibition that highlights the controversies faced by many Australian sportspersons during wartime in decades past. With original artworks, documents, photos and film, the wartime relics include a 'Brownlow' medal presented in a Changi POW camp.


Night StillsNight Stills is a series of pen and ink drawings by Matt Coyle, whose incredibly detailed work holds sinister snap-shots that blend memories and dreams. Combining dark images of fantasy and reality, the exhibition is currently running at St Kilda's Über Gallery.


Project8Project8, an exhibition of work by students at Deakin University, features a broad survey of talents including painting, photography, animation and multi-media works. A testimony to the commitment of the students, it is showing at Deakin's gallery in Burwood.


The Likher Pussy PortraitsThe Likher Pussy Portraits, which started as a joke about the resident cat at Gallery 696, features work from over 50 local, national and international artists in this now annual event. With purrrlenty of emphasis on the pun, the exhibition runs until Wednesday.


Silent RupturesSilent Ruptures, showing at Fitzroy's Centre for Contemporary Photography, coincides with three other exhibitions. The exhibition features images from three photographers in different parts of the world, whose works explore humanity's relation with their surrounds.


The Humanity of Abstract PaintingThe Humanity of Abstract Painting is a major survey exhibition of Diena Georgetti's artworks from the last two decades. Held at the Monash University Museum of Art in Clayton, the exhibition features enigmatic work such as Georgetti's early blackboard paintings.

The University of Melbourne's Open DayThe University of Melbourne's Open Day at their Parkville campus is the perfect opportunity for you and your family to explore career pathways and study options at one of Australia's leading universities. VCA Open DayVCA Open Day - This Sunday the Victorian College of the Arts, Australia's premier visual and performing arts training and education institution, are holding their Open Day in conjunction with the Open Day of the University of Melbourne. A chance to learn about what the college offers and see the VCA community in action, activities held on the day include cinema screenings of student-made films, live music and lectures.


The Home Buyer ShowThe Home Buyer Show can make buying your next home or investment property easier, offering secrets to simplifying the buying process, saving you time, money and unnecessary worry. It runs from Friday to Sunday at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.


The Trading and Investing ExpoThe Trading and Investing Expo, held this Friday and Saturday at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, is Australia's largest independent gathering of investing and trading experts. The expo features a wide range of exhibitors and free financial seminars.


Performances & Theatre


Travelling NorthTravelling North, the award-winning play by David Williamson, will be performed this Thursday and Friday at St. Martins Randell Theatre. Held as part of the production's current tour, performances feature Terence Donovan and Sandy Gore in the lead roles.


Lands EndLands End, running from Tuesday to Saturday at the Arts Centre, is the latest acclaimed work of Philippe Genty. Known for his masterful productions of theatrical fantasy, Genty's show follows a meeting between two people using illusion, puppetry and more.


Cat on a Hot Tin RoofCat on a Hot Tin Roof, the sultry classic by Tennessee Williams, is currently playing with an accompanying score performed by Paul Grabowsky. Presented by Melbourne Theatre Company, performances are being held at the Arts Centre.


Altar BoyzAltar Boyz, the critically acclaimed off Broadway sensation, is currently playing at the Athenaeum Theatre. The musical parody is about a fictitious Christian boy-band who begin to question their faith and each other on the last night of their tour.


The Massacre At ParisThe Massacre At Paris is the bloody tragedy about political and religious scheming in 16th Century Paris. Written by Christopher Marlowe, writer of the equally grim Doctor Faustus, the story of greed, murder and intrigue ends Sunday at St Kilda's TheatreWorks.


Be a Little Less StupidBe a Little Less Stupid is a fast-paced and musically comic revue of songs that features sketches and cautionary tales about the stupid things we all say and do on public transport. The cabaret of human foibles plays Thursday and Friday at Chapel Off Chapel.


BlackbirdBlackbird is an uncompromising but important play that addresses child sexual abuse. Playing at the CUB Malthouse's Beckett Theatre, the play tells the story of Ray, a man who thought he had escaped his past only to find he was very wrong. It runs until Saturday.


WickedWicked, based on Gregory Maguire's novel, is the hit musical that tells the untold story of the legendary witches from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Now playing at the Regent Theatre, the show reveals the surprising past of the supposedly Wicked Witch.


Classical & Choral Performances


The Australia Pro Arte Chamber OrchestraThe Australia Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra will be performing this Sunday and the following Monday as part of this year's concert series, The Range of Light. Celebrating 18th century musical ideals, the concerts will be performed at BMW Edge in Federation Square.


Harambee Winter CabaretHarambee Winter Cabaret, held annually, is a special performance by Harambee Choir, who appeared on Channel 7's "Battle of the Choirs"this year. With traditional music from Africa, South America, Europe and Australia, the show takes place Friday in Box Hill.


The Heidelberg Choral SocietyThe Heidelberg Choral Society will be holding performing Verdi's "Nabucco"Opera in concert this Saturday and Sunday. Formed in 1920, the Heidelberg Choral Society will be performing the special concerts at Northcote Town Hall.


Entertainment & Nightlife


Prism of EmotionsPrism of Emotions, presented by CMC Melbourne, is a Bharatanatyam Performance featuring Priyadarsini Govind. Showcasing different aspects of Bharatanatyam, the show takes place Sunday at The Open Stage of University of Melbourne.


Rock In The CityRock In The City | Starlight Benefit Gig - Rock in the City will be holding a night of live music at The Hi-fi Bar this Saturday, with performances by Justin Murphy, The Deep End and 78 From Home. 40% of all ticket sales on the night will go to the Starlight Children's Foundation.


Greg Stewart, Rod Wilson & Martin ZakharovGreg Stewart, Rod Wilson & Martin Zakharov, a popular jazz trio, will be performing at Sofi's Bar at the Hotel Sofitel on Saturday. Beginning at 9pm, their diverse arrangements include works by artists such as Sinatra, Snow Patrol and Leonard Cohen.


The Burlesque Hour.. She's Back!The Burlesque Hour.. She's Back! Following their world tour, the Burlesque Hour returns to Melbourne with a mix of new acts, all time favourites and fabulous new guest stars. The internationally renowned shows are currently playing at fortyfivedownstairs.




Melbourne For Kids


Cabaret VertigoCabaret Vertigo, presented by the National Institute of Circus Arts, is an opportunity to see the newest generation of circus artists alongside industry professionals performing their freshest acts. Shows will be held Friday and Saturday at NICA's Prahran centre.


Trick CircusTrick Circus invites kids to their special workshop on Saturday to Be a Circus Star! Australia's premier youth-run circus offers high-flying fun in the workshops where young people aged 5 to 15 can unleash their inner circus star with two sessions held in East Ivanhoe.


Luna FreezeLuna Freeze - Luna Park will be making the most of the winter months with Melbourne's newest ice skating venue, held in the middle of Luna Park's Winter Wonderland. With ice-skating set to cool tunes and all under dazzling lights, Luna Freeze runs until October.


Hatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs & BabiesHatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs & Babies is a rare and exciting look at the life of dinosaurs through their eggs, nests and embryos. The exhibition will be at Melbourne Museum with life-like models of hatchlings, illustrations of dinosaur life and stunning photographs.

A Melbourne horse race is the subject of the oldest surviving motion picture filmed in Australia. And no prizes for guessing which race!

The short film is of the 1896 Melbourne Cup. It was first shown along with imported films at the Princess Theatre on Spring Street two weeks later.
