Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for the week running from Tuesday May 12 - Monday May 18, 2009.

This week.. along with the Melbourne Fringe Jazz Festival, there's more fanfare and trumpets yet again as Melbourne gets another taste of swinging tunes with Stonnington Jazz offering a great series of performances. For those keen to hear something with a bit more grunt, there's Bendigo's music festival, Groovin The Moo.

The Spanish Film Festival opens this week with a program of screenings, forums and more, while for a more Eastern flavour there's the Buddha's Day and Multicultural Festival held at Federation Square. Moonee Valley Arts Week continues this week, and Creative Gippsland offers a unique program of events and exhibitions held throughout May to celebrate the local talent of, you guessed it, Gippsland.


Major Events Guide


Stonnington Jazz Stonnington Jazz, held at Chapel Off Chapel and Malvern Town Hall, is a festive program of over 20 performances by some of the finest jazz talent Australia has produced. Now in its 4th year, the festival features legendary performers like Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky, along with rising stars in Australia's Jazz scene.



Fair Trade Fiesta Fair Trade Fiesta, held as Melbourne key event to celebrate the global campaign of Fair Trade Fortnight, showcases the best of ethically produced goods such as chocolate and coffee. With an entertaining day held at Melbourne's RMIT Storey Hall it features music, film screenings, food, fashion stalls and more.



Buddha's Day and Multicultural Festival Buddha's Day and Multicultural Festival, held at Federation Square, commemorates the birth of the Buddha with a weekend of traditional Buddhist ceremonies, vegetarian food and cooking demonstrations, musical and dance performances and other special activities that include workshops for children at ArtPlay.



Creative Gippsland Creative Gippsland is a month-long celebration held throughout May that showcases hundreds of events in Gippsland and its neighbouring shires. Highlighting the diverse talent within the area, the program features events that cater to many tastes with exhibitions, workshops, performances and tours.



The Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival The Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival, regarded as a leading event in Melbourne's cultural calendar, returns with a program of performances held at various venues by some of the finest musicians who have helped Melbourne's reputation as the cultural capital of creative music in the Southern Hemisphere.



Moonee Valley Arts Week Moonee Valley Arts Week, held at various venues in Moonee Ponds, offers a program of special events that include dance performances, concerts, public installations, exhibitions, workshops and much more. Highlighting the theme of Exploring Sustainability this year, it includes the aRtECYCLE exhibition.



Law Week Law Week, held in the 3rd week of May, promotes a greater understanding and appreciation of our law and justice system by offering a chance for the community to come together with legal professionals and learn about the vital role law plays with many free events including exhibitions, seminars and more.

The Melbourne Italian Festival The Melbourne Italian Festival, now in its 5th year, is an event that embraces all aspects of performance to highlight the vibrant Italian culture throughout Melbourne. Held at various venues, the festival program includes everything from music and films to poetry, arts, and even Spaghetti Western screenings.




The Big Boat Cruise Party The Big Boat Cruise Party is a fantastic fun night for singles and couples cruising the bay dancing and partying with Melbourne's best Dj's. Departing from Central Pier in Docklands, the huge event offers a great night of entertainment on the water. Tickets are limited so be sure to book early.

Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show


Women and War Women and War, a photographic exhibition held at the Atrium of Federation Square, explores the many ways in which women are affected by war. Produced by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the exhibition honours the accomplishments of women during war, capturing their resilience and courage.



ARtECYCLE ARtECYCLE is an exhibition of temporary sculptures specially created to compliment the building and grounds of the Incinerator Arts Complex in Moonee Ponds. All the works featured are created from salvaged, recycled and found materials, used to transform the unwanted into impressive pieces of art.



Sketch City Sketch City is a monthly event held in Northcote that features music, art and live painting. Promoting a greater tolerance for street art and a sense of artistic community, Sketch City features a guest band performing live, a featured exhibition and the chance to get busy with your own talents making art on the day.



The Independent Type The Independent Type, held at the State Library of Victoria, is an exhibition that celebrates the history of Victoria's literary culture with displays and exhibits that mark the progression of writing by exploring traditional Indigenous storytelling through to colonial classics and today's vibrant writing scene.



Eric Henshall Eric Henshall will be holding an exhibition of his latest works at Melbourne's Guildford Lane Gallery. With artwork that captures the themes of love and beauty, his work explores emotions that were inspired by his surroundings in an attempt to separate the essence of what he sees from uncertainties and ambiguities.



Tender Things Tender Things, showing at the Hand Held Gallery in Bourke Street's Paramount Arcade, is an exhibition of work by Paul Compton that playfully explores the inherent fragility of objects, illusions and human lives with a collection of handmade books, objects and drawings that combine cynicism with nostalgia.



The Collectors' Exhibition The Collectors' Exhibition, held at Carlton's Steps Gallery, is an exhibition organised by the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria. Featuring 132 artworks from 86 artists, the exhibition is a showcase of diverse work that includes affordable paintings, sculpture, digital, mixed media and more.



Central Periphery Central Periphery, showing at the RMIT Gallery in Swanston Street, brings together the work of six Northern European artists. Curated by Scottish artist Alan Johnston, whose drawings are featured, the exhibition explores ideas of landscape and spaces through minimal abstraction, alternative drawing and installation.



Expos, Launches & Open Days


Shaping Elegance Shaping Elegance, held at Como Historic House and Garden in South Yarra, is a fashion exhibition that showcases the work and designs of Robert Fritzlaff, a master craftsman who stood out and established his reputation in the late 1960s. The designer himself will be part of special tours on selected dates.




Performances & Theatre


A Little Night Music A Little Night Music, presented by Opera Australia, features Sigrid Thornton in her Opera Australia debut along with Nancye Hayes and Robert Grubb, who are reunited in this new production that includes Stephen Sondheim's classic and whimsical song, 'Send in the Clowns' in this show held at the Arts Centre.



The Role Model The Role Model, performed by BooBook Theatre, is a humorous play about Scott, a retired Olympic Swimming champion whose life as a motivational speaker takes a turn for the worst when he sleeps with his best mate's wife. Performances are held at the Cromwell Road Theatre in South Yarra.



Speed-the-Plow Speed-the-Plow, performed at Chapel Off Chapel, is David Mamet's play about what happens when artistic integrity falls foul of greed as Hollywood producers Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox question how faithful the adaptation of a novel should be, a debate the office temp joins after reading the book.



Into the Woods Into the Woods, presented by University of Melbourne Music Theatre Association, is Stephen Sondheim's musical adaptation of James Lapine`s book. Blending classic tales such as Cinderella into a darkly witty exploration of what happens beyond the 'happily ever after', it plays at the university's Union Theatre.



Teuila Postcards Teuila Postcards, a performance that fuses traditional dance with contemporary theatre, is a tongue in cheek look at the oppression and evolution of Polynesia that uses historic elements such as missionary diaries and even a hilarious Elvis inspired advert. It's showing at North Melbourne's Arts House.



Garden of Delights Garden of Delights, performed at St Kilda's Theatre Works, is a surrealist play of dark sexuality by Ferando Arrabal, who penned the play in 1960's. The story of an actress who escapes reality by withdrawing into am imagined garden, the play was last performed 30 years ago at the Jam Factory.



Someone Who'll Watch Over Me Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, a Broadway hit based on true events, tells the story of three men kidnapped in broad daylight on the streets of Beirut and held together in a small cell. Performed at Fortyfivedownstairs in Flinders Lane, the play is inspired by conversations shared by the abductees.



Tom Fool Tom Fool, presented by Hoy Polloy theatre, is a daring and compelling drama that focuses on the everyday lives of ordinary working-class people and takes us back to the moment when women changed the rules of the game. Performances will be held at the Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre in Brunswick.



Dralion Dralion is the latest show by Cirque du Soleil. With performances held under their trademark blue and yellow Grand Chapiteau in Docklands, the show is a fusion of ancient Chinese circus traditions and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil which has made them the world's most renowned circus performers.



Classical, Choral & Recitals


Katia Skanavi Katia Skanavi will be making her first-ever Australian tour with performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre in Southbank. The Moscow-born pianist, who has been regarded as an extraordinary talent since the age of 12, will perform signature works by Chopin and sonatas by Franz Schubert and Carl Vine.



The Lunchtime Concert Series The Lunchtime Concert Series, presented by the School of Music-Conservatorium at Clayton's Monash University, provides staff, students and the community a chance to enjoy a musical lunch break. Performed each Thursday, this week's concert is Choral Ensembles, featuring work by Australian composers.



Entertainment & Nightlife


Groovin the Moo Groovin the Moo, a regional music festival that will make an appearance at Bendigo Showgrounds this year, features some of the hottest acts across two main stages and a huge dance tent. With big names like The Living End and De La Soul, the line-up includes The Darts, regional winners of Triple j unearthed.



Bobby Flynn Bobby Flynn will be performing a limited series of intimate shows in Victoria with performances held at Queen Street's Blue Diamond. Having been recently ensconced in the studio, the shows will be a chance to hear his work before a new record is released later in the year.



Suzannah Espie Suzannah Espie, known as Australia's first queen of country soul will be performing with her band, The Last Word, to celebrate the launch of their second album, First And Last Hotel. Along with special guests, The Fireside Bellows, they will be performing at The Toff, located in Melbourne's Curtin House.



Matt Kelly and the Keepers Matt Kelly and the Keepers will be performing at the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy, having returned from their recent tour supporting Ani Di Franco. With their debut album due for release in September, Matt Kelly and the Keepers will be supported on the night by the Barons of Tang and experimental band, Psuche.



Suade Suade, Australia's leading male vocal group, will be launching their second full studio album, Home Brew, with a special performance held at The Hi Fi bar on Swanston Street. Offering a delightful lazy Sunday affair with a cappella that crosses many styles, under-18s are welcome if with a parent or legal guardian.



The Melbourne Folk Club The Melbourne Folk Club meet each weekend to enjoy live acoustic music, offering a great afternoon with CDs available by local performers. Performances are held at the Grandview Hotel in West Brunswick with the next guest performers being Frank Burkitt with Chris Stone and Holly Downes.



South Side FunkSouth Side Funk features the funkiest DJ's from both Melbourne and interstate playing true old-school funk like you'll never find at any other venue. Held at Big Mouth, located in St Kilda, South Side Funk is the hottest place in Melbourne for all you money-maker shakers to get down with groovy basslines.



Burlesque & Cabaret


Curly Girl Burlesque Curly Girl Burlesque, held at Fitzroy's Burlesque Bar each week, is a fun, cheeky and risque show, which began as an Hours Level research project by Claire Haywood, and has since gone on to become a hit that celebrates the burlesque of yesteryear with a contemporary touch that challenges perceptions of women.



Cristal Burlesque Cristal Burlesque, held each week at the Chapel Street bar, Cristal, showcases some of Australia's finest Burlesque performers with circus and vaudeville acts, regular international guests and DJs playing sultry blues at one of Melbourne's most luxurious venues and decadent events.



Cinema


The Spanish Film Festival The Spanish Film Festival, now celebrating 12 years, offers a fantastic program that features entertaining and beautiful films screening at Palace Cinema Como and Kino Cinema. This year's selection also includes the largest retrospective of the irreverent Luis Buñuel's work ever screened in Australia.



West Side Shorts West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a monthly film night held at the Junction Hotel in Newport. Held every second Tuesday of the month, the film nights are a chance to see fantastic short films made by local talent and also to network with local filmmakers and actors.





Melbourne For Kids


Barbie Meet and Greet Barbie Meet and Greet - Barbie fans can meet and greet their favourite blonde at the Target store of Westfield Southland, located in Cheltenham. She'll be appearing as part of Target's Barbie and Hot Wheels, offering picture opportunities for all fans, so don't forget to bring a camera.



Kid Disco Kid Disco is at the Chelsea Heights Hotel where kids can enjoy all the fun of a primary school disco kicked up a notch! With two sessions held every Saturday afternoon, Kid Disco features professional DJ's, a disco light show and dance instructors who perform and offer dancing tips. Entry includes a meal on the day.



Circus Shows


Silvers Grand Magic Circus Silvers Grand Magic Circus will be appearing in Melton with performances at Woodgrove Shopping Centre. Established in 1976, Silvers Grand Magic Circus offers a great show for the whole family, with everything from jugglers and clowns to acrobats, international performers and much more.

Questions, comments, heckling and interjections are welcome from all, simply turn up on the day to participate or listen.
