This week.. along with the Melbourne Fringe Jazz Festival, there's more fanfare and trumpets yet again as Melbourne gets another taste of swinging tunes with Stonnington Jazz offering a great series of performances. For those keen to hear something with a bit more grunt, there's Bendigo's music festival, Groovin The Moo.
The Spanish Film Festival opens this week with a program of screenings, forums and more, while for a more Eastern flavour there's the Buddha's Day and Multicultural Festival held at Federation Square. Moonee Valley Arts Week continues this week, and Creative Gippsland offers a unique program of events and exhibitions held throughout May to celebrate the local talent of, you guessed it, Gippsland.

Stonnington Jazz, held at Chapel Off Chapel and Malvern Town Hall, is a festive program of over 20 performances by some of the finest jazz talent Australia has produced. Now in its 4th year, the festival features legendary performers like Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky, along with rising stars in Australia's Jazz scene.

Women and War, a photographic exhibition held at the Atrium of Federation Square, explores the many ways in which women are affected by war. Produced by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the exhibition honours the accomplishments of women during war, capturing their resilience and courage.

ARtECYCLE is an exhibition of temporary sculptures specially created to compliment the building and grounds of the Incinerator Arts Complex in Moonee Ponds. All the works featured are created from salvaged, recycled and found materials, used to transform the unwanted into impressive pieces of art.

Sketch City is a monthly event held in Northcote that features music, art and live painting. Tender Things, showing at the Hand Held Gallery in Bourke Street's Paramount Arcade, is an exhibition of work by Paul Compton that playfully explores the inherent fragility of objects, illusions and human lives with a collection of handmade books, objects and drawings that combine cynicism with nostalgia.

The Collectors' Exhibition, held at Carlton's Steps Gallery, is an exhibition organised by the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria. Featuring 132 artworks from 86 artists, the exhibition is a showcase of diverse work that includes affordable paintings, sculpture, digital, mixed media and more.

Central Periphery, showing at the RMIT Gallery in Swanston Street, brings together the work of six Northern European artists. Expos, Launches & Open Days
Shaping Elegance, held at Como Historic House and Garden in South Yarra, is a fashion exhibition that showcases the work and designs of Robert Fritzlaff, a master craftsman who stood out and established his reputation in the late 1960s. A Little Night Music, presented by Opera Australia, features Sigrid Thornton in her Opera Australia debut along with Nancye Hayes and Robert Grubb, who are reunited in this new production that includes Stephen Sondheim's classic and whimsical song, 'Send in the Clowns' in this show held at the Arts Centre.

The Role Model, performed by BooBook Theatre, is a humorous play about Scott, a retired Olympic Swimming champion whose life as a motivational speaker takes a turn for the worst when he sleeps with his best mate's wife. Performances are held at the Cromwell Road Theatre in South Yarra.

Speed-the-Plow, performed at Chapel Off Chapel, is David Mamet's play about what happens when artistic integrity falls foul of greed as Hollywood producers Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox question how faithful the adaptation of a novel should be, a debate the office temp joins after reading the book.

Into the Woods, presented by University of Melbourne Music Theatre Association, is Stephen Sondheim's musical adaptation of James Lapine`s book. Blending classic tales such as Cinderella into a darkly witty exploration of what happens beyond the 'happily ever after', it plays at the university's Union Theatre.

Teuila Postcards, a performance that fuses traditional dance with contemporary theatre, is a tongue in cheek look at the oppression and evolution of Polynesia that uses historic elements such as missionary diaries and even a hilarious Elvis inspired advert. It's showing at North Melbourne's Arts House.

Garden of Delights, performed at St Kilda's Theatre Works, is a surrealist play of dark sexuality by Ferando Arrabal, who penned the play in 1960's. The story of an actress who escapes reality by withdrawing into am imagined garden, the play was last performed 30 years ago at the Jam Factory.

Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, a Broadway hit based on true events, tells the story of three men kidnapped in broad daylight on the streets of Beirut and held together in a small cell. Performed at Fortyfivedownstairs in Flinders Lane, the play is inspired by conversations shared by the abductees.

Tom Fool, presented by Hoy Polloy theatre, is a daring and compelling drama that focuses on the everyday lives of ordinary working-class people and takes us back to the moment when women changed the rules of the game. Performances will be held at the Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre in Brunswick.

Dralion is the latest show by Cirque du Soleil. With performances held under their trademark blue and yellow Grand Chapiteau in Docklands, the show is a fusion of ancient Chinese circus traditions and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil which has made them the world's most renowned circus performers.

Classical, Choral & Recitals
Katia Skanavi will be making her first-ever Australian tour with performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre in Southbank. The Moscow-born pianist, who has been regarded as an extraordinary talent since the age of 12, will perform signature works by Chopin and sonatas by Franz Schubert and Carl Vine.

The Lunchtime Concert Series, presented by the School of Music-Conservatorium at Clayton's Monash University, provides staff, students and the community a chance to enjoy a musical lunch break. Performed each Thursday, this week's concert is Choral Ensembles, featuring work by Australian composers.

Entertainment & Nightlife
Groovin the Moo, a regional music festival that will make an appearance at Bendigo Showgrounds this year, features some of the hottest acts across two main stages and a huge dance tent. With big names like The Living End and De La Soul, the line-up includes The Darts, regional winners of Triple j unearthed.

Bobby Flynn will be performing a limited series of intimate shows in Victoria with performances held at Queen Street's Blue Diamond. Having been recently ensconced in the studio, the shows will be a chance to hear his work before a new record is released later in the year.

Suzannah Espie, known as Australia's first queen of country soul will be performing with her band, The Last Word, to celebrate the launch of their second album, First And Last Hotel. Along with special guests, The Fireside Bellows, they will be performing at The Toff, located in Melbourne's Curtin House.

Matt Kelly and the Keepers will be performing at the Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy, having returned from their recent tour supporting Ani Di Franco. With their debut album due for release in September, Matt Kelly and the Keepers will be supported on the night by the Barons of Tang and experimental band, Psuche.

The Spanish Film Festival, now celebrating 12 years, offers a fantastic program that features entertaining and beautiful films screening at Palace Cinema Como and Kino Cinema. West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a monthly film night held at the Junction Hotel in Newport. Held every second Tuesday of the month, the film nights are a chance to see fantastic short films made by local talent and also to network with local filmmakers and actors.
