This week.. there's the sweet and experimental sounds of Liquid Architecture, Australia's premier sound-arts festival with events held in Melbourne and Bendigo. NAIDOC Week sees a free Family Day held at Collingwood Children's Farm celebrating the heritage of Aboriginal people, while not too far away in Fitzroy you'll find the ongoing Gertrude Street Projection Festival with public displays akimbo.

The Melbourne Magic Festival continues throughout the School Holidays while the kids can also enjoy the teeny-weeny offerings of the Miniatures and Dollhouse Fair.

Major Events Guide


Liquid Architecture Liquid Architecture, now in its 10th year, is Australia's premier sound-arts festival. The festival's events explore methods and theories of sound with performances, installations and exhibitions by some of Australia's most imaginative musicians, composers, and media artists held at various venues in Melbourne.



The Gertrude Street Projection Festival The Gertrude Street Projection Festival is a program of projected media that spans along Gertrude Street, literally turning one of Fitzroy's main strips into an outdoor gallery with free projection art to view and special events held during the festival featuring animation, music and more.



NAIDOC Week Family Day NAIDOC Week Family Day - Highlighting the unique culture and heritage of Aboriginal people, NAIDOC will be celebrated with a Family Day at Collingwood Children's Farm. The free event is fun and educational with damper making, boomerang painting and throwing, story telling and Indigenous plant tours.



The Melbourne Magic Festival The Melbourne Magic Festival, held at Northcote Town Hall, is the biggest gathering of magicians in Australia with a program that boasts 70 performances of 20 different shows. Presented by the Australian Institute of Magic, the festival features magic classes, workshops, auctions and even Magic Championships.



The Scarf Festival The Scarf Festival, held primarily at the National Wool Museum in Geelong and various venues in Melbourne, offers a program of workshops and events that includes The Transformation Showcase, an exhibition of original scarves created by entrants using this year's theme of Transformation.

Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show


The Family Mould The Family Mould, showing at Hawthorn's Town Hall Gallery, is an exhibition that continues Ilona Nelson's exploration into her self-identity. Prompted by the birth of her first child, which created time to reflect on the history of her family tree, her hand coloured photographs pay homage to her family album.




Lucidia Lucidia, held at Fitzroy's Unpretentiously Underground, is an exhibition by Nom, a London based artist whose drawings and paintings explore somethings old and somethings new with images that portray female characters teetering along between the real and imaginary, with clown grins and pheasant moons.



Does my Art Look Good? Does my Art Look Good? is an art exhibition held at the Chapel on Station Gallery in Box Hill, which features the work of more than 20 artists who are members of the Gifford Arts Project, a program run by UnitingCare for local artists with disabilities. Artworks at the exhibition will be for sale.



Fox in a Box Fox in a Box is a photographic installation by Rebecca McIntosh that tells the tale of the facetious character Flying Fox Woman, an urban legend and home-made superhero suffering from domestication. The installation can be seen at The Dolls House, a unique miniature gallery held in a shop window in Preston.



Thing of the Past Thing of the Past, presented by Save the Children, is a free display held at Southern Cross Station for a limited time. Highlighting issues that will one day become a thing of the past, the exhibition features carefully selected items that represent the confronting issues still facing children in third world countries.



All About Birds All About Birds is an exhibition presented by the Wildlife Art Society of Australia that features artwork by the group's many talented artists who've celebrated our feathered friends with works that include paintings and even sculptures using barbed wire and tin. It's held at the BOCA Gallery in Nunawading.



A Day in Pompeii A Day in Pompeii, a special exhibit held at Melbourne Museum, depicts the daily life of one of the world's most extraordinary cities, Pompeii, which was destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. With over 250 objects, the exhibit includes an immersive 3D theatre.



SCHMUCK SCHMUCK, exhibiting at the RMIT Gallery in Swanston Street, is a collection of the world's most dynamic contemporary jewellery. Shown in Australia for the first time, it's also only fourth time the prestigious collection of jewellery from designers around the world has been seen outside of Munich in its 50-year history.



The Salvador Dali Deseo Liquido Exhibition The Salvador Dali Deseo Liquido Exhibition, held at Artiq Galleries in South Yarra, is an intimate collection of paintings and sculptures by the celebrated master of surrealism. Exhibited for the first time in Australia, and exclusively at Artiq Galleries, the authenticated works are free to view and all are for sale.



James Makin Gallery James Makin Gallery will be holding an exhibition of works for its Winter Collection, marking the opening of the new gallery in Collingwood. The exhibition will feature select major works by each artist represented by James Makin Gallery, also showcasing the new inspiring light-filled venue.



In The Black In The Black, held at Lauraine Diggins Fine Art Gallery in Caulfield North, is an exhibition of black and white imagery that showcases drawing, photography and prints from a variety of genres. The exhibition featuring work by many diverse artists, ranging from colonial to contemporary and aboriginal art.



The International Next Big Thing Award The International Next Big Thing Award, held at Melbourne Museum, features the designs of finalists' innovations. This year's entries reflecting the challenges of our time in the medical, environmental and ICT fields with designs including a paper water bottle, a musical robot and many more amazing creations.



The Independent Type The Independent Type, held at the State Library of Victoria, is an exhibition that celebrates the history of Victoria's literary culture with displays and exhibits that mark the progression of writing by exploring traditional Indigenous storytelling through to colonial classics and today's vibrant writing scene.



Launches, Expos & Seminars


The Miniatures and Dollhouse Fair & Exhibition The Miniatures and Dollhouse Fair & Exhibition, held at Mount Waverley Community Centre, is the Victorian Association of Miniature Enthusiasts' annual exhibition and trading show when clubs and individual members present intricate and stunning displays of dollhouses, furniture and more.



The Reinvent Your Career Expo The Reinvent Your Career Expo, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, offers information on career opportunities, skills matching and education options for those looking to explore future career paths. The expo features seminars, career counselling, free resume services and more.



The Forever Barbie Exhibition The Forever Barbie Exhibition, held at Federation Square, is the largest collection of Barbie Dolls ever assembled in Southern Hemisphere. One of the most prominent characters in pop culture, the exhibition celebrates Barbie's 50th Anniversary with some of the quirkiest dolls released in her long history.



Performances & Theatre


And a child shall lead And a child shall lead, presented by Boilerhouse Theatre Company, is a true story that tells of the heroic children who had to come of age and strive to survive in Nazi's 'Jewish City', Terezin. A tribute to youth and determination, the play contains actual poems and songs from the children of that era.



A Dud & A Babe A Dud & A Babe, performed at the new Gallery Room of Melbourne's Paris Cat Jazz Club, is a cabaret that features an unlucky in love flirt and a dorky primary school teacher who go in search of their inner babe while trying to off load their inner dud on a comedy full of humour, dancing and singing.



Jersey Boys Jersey Boys, performed at the Princess Theatre, is the Broadway hit that charts the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons as the play takes a nostalgic look at how four blue-collar kids became one of the greatest successes in pop music history while showcasing the great songs they became famous for.



West Side Story West Side Story, one of the classic plays in musical theatre history, will be performed by the Amateur Repertory Company at Banyule Theatre. Combining breathtaking dance sequences with some of Broadway's most memorable songs, West Side Story is sure to appeal to all generations of theatre-goers.



Cold Comfort Cold Comfort, directed by Brendan Rock and starring David Rock, is the story of Kevin Toner who returns to Belfast after an absence of 15 years to have a last 'conversation' with his recently deceased father. A play that inspires laughter and tears, performances are held at Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran.



Art Revue Art Revue, held at The Flying Duck in Prahran, is a weekly evening of entertainment that presents performances that that feature belly dancing and Indian dancers, mime, theatre artists and the exotic, along with the chance to be inspired and capture the night with drawing materials included with entry on the night.



Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story returns to Melbourne with a brand new production held at the Palms at Crown. The live music extravaganza, which has become one of the biggest hits on the stage, presents the story of the iconic singer with two hours of his greatest hits that inspired many other performers.



The Birthday Party The Birthday Party, the classic play by Harold Pinter, will be performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at the Arts Centre's Fairfax Studio. Now regarded as a classic post-war drama, the play tells of how one man's life in a seaside boarding house is unsettled when two new lodgers arrive.



Lobby Hero Lobby Hero, a production by Red Stitch Actors Theatre in St Kilda, is a play from the writer of This is Our Youth and the screenplays You Can Count on Me and Gangs of New York. In the lobby of a city high-rise, Jeff, a luckless young security guard, is drawn into a murder investigation that stretch his loyalties.



The Man from Mukinupin The Man from Mukinupin, written by one of Australia's greats of playwriting, Dorothy Hewett, will be performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at their Sumner Theatre in Southbank. The play, set in Mukinupin, east of the rabbit-proof fence, is a tale of forbidden love and the secrets within the community there.



Avenue Q Avenue Q is a new breed of musical, performed by a weird and wonderful mix of humans and puppets. Winner of three Broadway Tony Awards, the tasteless yet hilarious production is a cross between Sesame Street, the Muppet Show and any adult comedy you could shake a puppet at. Note: This is NOT a Kid's Show.



Classical, Choral & Recitals


Freshwater Trio Freshwater Trio will be holding a performance at the Salon of the Melbourne Recital Centre as part of this year's concert series. Acclaimed by audiences and peers as one of Australia's foremost performing chamber ensembles, the group will perform works by Bach, Mendelssohn and Schubert.



The Ten Tenors The Ten Tenors will be appearing at the Arts Centre where they'll perform their new show, Nostalgica: A Journey of Musical Memories. The show will feature music from their latest studio album, 'Nostalgica', which features classic songs ranging from Mexican best-sellers to post-war classics to jazz.



Cry Baby Classical Concerts Cry Baby Classical Concerts, organised by 3MBS 103.5FM Classically Melbourne and the City of Yarra, offer parents and children the chance to enjoy classical music. With music for children performed live by a variety of local classical musicians, performances are held monthly at Malvern Town Hall.



Dance


Noche Flamenca Noche Flamenca, starring Soledad Barrio, is a passionate celebration of the human spirit through exhilarating dance, song and music. Direct from Madrid, Spain's brightest flamenco stars will stage performances at the Arts Centre that hold passion and sensuality, capturing the essence of traditional flamenco.



I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain, a performance held as part of Dancehouse's Housemate Residency Program, presents a visual poem for anyone who has taken the enchanting qualities of their broken world and built a fairytale as inspiration to survive. It's running at North Carlton's Dancehouse.



Moving Works Moving Works, held at Theatre Works in St Kilda, showcases 12 amazing dance performers in a series of performances where they have just 10 minutes to work their magic on the stage. The dance showcase will also include the presentations of the People's Choice and Creative Development Awards.



Entertainment & Nightlife


Casey Freeman Casey Freeman, whose songs are sweet yet trashy, intimate yet vibrant, will be appearing at Northcote's Wesley Anne. With lyrics that are honest and heart warming, her performances are vibrant as she freestyles easily between her own material and covers of classics by those like Frank Sinatra.



Adam Pavitt Adam Pavitt will be performing at the Edinburgh Castle in Brunswick to launch his new CD, 'Seasons Will Pass'. If you're looking for smooth tunes with a conscience, check out Adam Pavitt's mix of funk, folk and blues along with performance artists, music videos and installation pieces on the night.



Leticia Maher's Warm Up Show Leticia Maher's Warm Up Show - Leticia Maher will be performing her songs as a warm up show before her upcoming Album launch at The Penny Black in Brunswick, formerly known as Don't Tell Tom Bar. The evening features special guest musicians including the Schade Belles on backing vocals.



Visible Sessions Live Visible Sessions Live, presented by Multicultural Arts Victoria, is a series of performances that unites musicians in jam sessions that combine Aussie sounds with influences from around the world. Held at Black Box at the Arts Centre, the second session features MC's and DJ's including Nomadic Funk.



The Bucket Room The Bucket Room, held at Grumpy's Green in Fitzroy, is a night of entertainment held weekly with live original showcase that features original bands, solo artists, songwriters and duos. Free to attend, gold donations are welcome for your favourite band on the night when the buckets are passed around.



Burlesque & Cabaret


The Burlesque Hour LEGENDS! The Burlesque Hour LEGENDS! is a series of performances held at Flinders Lane's fortyfivedownstairs that presents the best of Burlesque with an international line up of legendary performers. With a special guest performer heading the bill each fortnight, shows currently feature the renowned vocalist, Paul Capsis.



Curly Girl Burlesque Curly Girl Burlesque, held at Fitzroy's Burlesque Bar each week, is a fun, cheeky and risque show, which began as an Hours Level research project by Claire Haywood, and has since gone on to become a hit that celebrates the burlesque of yesteryear with a contemporary touch that challenges perceptions of women.



Comedy


The Impro Cave The Impro Cave returns for another great run of entertainment to help beat the winter chills with a toasty warm venue at The Penny Black in Brunswick and the hottest improvised entertainment. This year's series of improvised shows are ones of exploration and adventure with a new show each time.



Comedy@Spleen Comedy@Spleen is a comedy night at Spleen Bar in Bourke Street, where you can step out to enjoy a great night out with an eclectic mix of Melbourne's comedy scene featuring established personalities and comedy legends from radio and television with guests such as Glenn Robbins, Corinne Grant and others.





Melbourne For Kids


The New Adventure Island The New Adventure Island, performed at the Whitehorse Centre in Nunawading, is a show for children aged 2 to 8 years that's packed with fun, audience interactivity, songs and tap dancing as the happy Adventure Islanders face the plans of Mizzda Meaner, who's determined to stop them smiling.



Frozen in Time Frozen in Time - Get set to discover a Winter Wonderland at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat these school holidays. Now a signature event, Winter Wonderland this year offers an interactive exhibit with walk-in zone complete with huge ice sculptures depicting the gold-rush era along with some great holiday activities.



Luna Freeze Luna Freeze, a special ice skating rink at Luna Park will be making the most of the winter months with Melbourne's most fun ice skating venue, held in the middle of Luna Park's Winter Wonderland. With ice-skating set to cool tunes and all under dazzling lights, Luna Freeze is great fun!



The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be making special appearances at Melbourne Aquarium to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic characters. Live performances will be held everyday throughout the winter school holidays from 11am, offering a fun show with an environmental message.



The Gallery Ark The Gallery Ark, a touring exhibition designed for children, aims to encourage a sense of curiosity by presenting some of the treasures of the NGV collection. Telling the story of Noah's Ark as seen through the different religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It's now showing at Langwarrin's McClelend Gallery.



Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination is a special exhibit at Scienceworks where you can discover the science behind the Star Wars films. The exhibition features authentic costumes and props from the entire Star Wars saga, including the iconic Darth Vader's menacing attire.



Circus Shows


Circus Oz Circus Oz has returned to Australia, following their recent tour of Europe, USA and New Zealand. The Circus Oz show is a high-energy animal free spectacular, bursting with colour, comedy and breathtaking feats! They'll be appearing under the Big Top, located at Birrarung Marr near Federation Square.



Circus Sunrise Holiday Spectacular Circus Sunrise, an action-packed show for all the family, will be appearing in Wantirna South, located at the O-zone car park of Knox City. A true family circus with lineage going back to 1648, the performances od Circus Sunrise feature juggling, daring acrobatics and whip-cracking excitement!



Silvers Grand Magic Circus Silvers Grand Magic Circus will be holding performances at Burvale Hotel's Car Park in Nunawading. Established in 1976, Silvers Grand Magic Circus offers a great show for the whole family, with everything from jugglers and clowns to acrobats, international performers and more.
