This week.. there's the sweet and experimental sounds of Liquid Architecture, Australia's premier sound-arts festival with events held in Melbourne and Bendigo. NAIDOC Week sees a free Family Day held at Collingwood Children's Farm celebrating the heritage of Aboriginal people, while not too far away in Fitzroy you'll find the ongoing Gertrude Street Projection Festival with public displays akimbo.
The Melbourne Magic Festival continues throughout the School Holidays while the kids can also enjoy the teeny-weeny offerings of the Miniatures and Dollhouse Fair.

Liquid Architecture, now in its 10th year, is Australia's premier sound-arts festival. The festival's events explore methods and theories of sound with performances, installations and exhibitions by some of Australia's most imaginative musicians, composers, and media artists held at various venues in Melbourne.

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival is a program of projected media that spans along Gertrude Street, literally turning one of Fitzroy's main strips into an outdoor gallery with free projection art to view and special events held during the festival featuring animation, music and more.

NAIDOC Week Family Day - Highlighting the unique culture and heritage of Aboriginal people, NAIDOC will be celebrated with a Family Day at Collingwood Children's Farm. The free event is fun and educational with damper making, boomerang painting and throwing, story telling and Indigenous plant tours.

The Melbourne Magic Festival, held at Northcote Town Hall, is the biggest gathering of magicians in Australia with a program that boasts 70 performances of 20 different shows. Presented by the Australian Institute of Magic, the festival features magic classes, workshops, auctions and even Magic Championships.

The Scarf Festival, held primarily at the National Wool Museum in Geelong and various venues in Melbourne, offers a program of workshops and events that includes The Transformation Showcase, an exhibition of original scarves created by entrants using this year's theme of Transformation.

The Family Mould, showing at Hawthorn's Town Hall Gallery, is an exhibition that continues Ilona Nelson's exploration into her self-identity. Prompted by the birth of her first child, which created time to reflect on the history of her family tree, her hand coloured photographs pay homage to her family album.

Lucidia, held at Fitzroy's Unpretentiously Underground, is an exhibition by Nom, a London based artist whose drawings and paintings explore somethings old and somethings new with images that portray female characters teetering along between the real and imaginary, with clown grins and pheasant moons.

Does my Art Look Good? is an art exhibition held at the Chapel on Station Gallery in Box Hill, which features the work of more than 20 artists who are members of the Gifford Arts Project, a program run by UnitingCare for local artists with disabilities. Artworks at the exhibition will be for sale.

Fox in a Box is a photographic installation by Rebecca McIntosh that tells the tale of the facetious character Flying Fox Woman, an urban legend and home-made superhero suffering from domestication. The installation can be seen at The Dolls House, a unique miniature gallery held in a shop window in Preston.

Thing of the Past, presented by Save the Children, is a free display held at Southern Cross Station for a limited time. Highlighting issues that will one day become a thing of the past, the exhibition features carefully selected items that represent the confronting issues still facing children in third world countries.

All About Birds is an exhibition presented by the Wildlife Art Society of Australia that features artwork by the group's many talented artists who've celebrated our feathered friends with works that include paintings and even sculptures using barbed wire and tin. It's held at the BOCA Gallery in Nunawading.

A Day in Pompeii, a special exhibit held at Melbourne Museum, depicts the daily life of one of the world's most extraordinary cities, Pompeii, which was destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. With over 250 objects, the exhibit includes an immersive 3D theatre.

SCHMUCK, exhibiting at the RMIT Gallery in Swanston Street, is a collection of the world's most dynamic contemporary jewellery. Shown in Australia for the first time, it's also only fourth time the prestigious collection of jewellery from designers around the world has been seen outside of Munich in its 50-year history.

The Salvador Dali Deseo Liquido Exhibition, held at Artiq Galleries in South Yarra, is an intimate collection of paintings and sculptures by the celebrated master of surrealism. Exhibited for the first time in Australia, and exclusively at Artiq Galleries, the authenticated works are free to view and all are for sale.

James Makin Gallery will be holding an exhibition of works for its Winter Collection, marking the opening of the new gallery in Collingwood. The exhibition will feature select major works by each artist represented by James Makin Gallery, also showcasing the new inspiring light-filled venue.

The International Next Big Thing Award, held at Melbourne Museum, features the designs of finalists' innovations. And a child shall lead, presented by Boilerhouse Theatre Company, is a true story that tells of the heroic children who had to come of age and strive to survive in Nazi's 'Jewish City', Terezin. A Dud & A Babe, performed at the new Gallery Room of Melbourne's Paris Cat Jazz Club, is a cabaret that features an unlucky in love flirt and a dorky primary school teacher who go in search of their inner babe while trying to off load their inner dud on a comedy full of humour, dancing and singing.

Jersey Boys, performed at the Princess Theatre, is the Broadway hit that charts the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons as the play takes a nostalgic look at how four blue-collar kids became one of the greatest successes in pop music history while showcasing the great songs they became famous for.

Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story returns to Melbourne with a brand new production held at the Palms at Crown. The Birthday Party, the classic play by Harold Pinter, will be performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at the Arts Centre's Fairfax Studio. Now regarded as a classic post-war drama, the play tells of how one man's life in a seaside boarding house is unsettled when two new lodgers arrive.

Lobby Hero, a production by Red Stitch Actors Theatre in St Kilda, is a play from the writer of This is Our Youth and the screenplays You Can Count on Me and Gangs of New York. In the lobby of a city high-rise, Jeff, a luckless young security guard, is drawn into a murder investigation that stretch his loyalties.

The Man from Mukinupin, written by one of Australia's greats of playwriting, Dorothy Hewett, will be performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at their Sumner Theatre in Southbank. The play, set in Mukinupin, east of the rabbit-proof fence, is a tale of forbidden love and the secrets within the community there.

Avenue Q is a new breed of musical, performed by a weird and wonderful mix of humans and puppets. Winner of three Broadway Tony Awards, the tasteless yet hilarious production is a cross between Sesame Street, the Muppet Show and any adult comedy you could shake a puppet at. Freshwater Trio will be holding a performance at the Salon of the Melbourne Recital Centre as part of this year's concert series. Acclaimed by audiences and peers as one of Australia's foremost performing chamber ensembles, the group will perform works by Bach, Mendelssohn and Schubert.

The Ten Tenors will be appearing at the Arts Centre where they'll perform their new show, Nostalgica: A Journey of Musical Memories. The show will feature music from their latest studio album, 'Nostalgica', which features classic songs ranging from Mexican best-sellers to post-war classics to jazz.

The Gallery Ark, a touring exhibition designed for children, aims to encourage a sense of curiosity by presenting some of the treasures of the NGV collection. Telling the story of Noah's Ark as seen through the different religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It's now showing at Langwarrin's McClelend Gallery.

Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination is a special exhibit at Scienceworks where you can discover the science behind the Star Wars films. The exhibition features authentic costumes and props from the entire Star Wars saga, including the iconic Darth Vader's menacing attire.

Circus Oz has returned to Australia, following their recent tour of Europe, USA and New Zealand. The Circus Oz show is a high-energy animal free spectacular, bursting with colour, comedy and breathtaking feats!
