This week.. The Hume Winter Music Festival kicks off with a program of entertainment and music to warm your cockles during this chilly season, or you can take your cockles elsewhere and enjoy the many events on offer with the State of Design Festival, which includes the very popular Melbourne Open House, a day when we all get a grab at the keys to the city with a chance to explore some of Melbourne's best buildings.
Footscray celebrates 150 years and goes all out with a grand day filled with free music, fun and entertainment, while at Abbotsford Convent there's the Crime and Justice Festival offering forums and events to explore crime fiction and the legal system.

Major Events Guide
Footscray 150, celebrating Footscray's 150th Anniversary, is a free festival day featuring music, puppetry and dance. Held at Nicholson Street Mall and Madden Square, entertainment on the day includes performances by Diafrix, Snuff Puppets, West African drumming, art exhibitions and much more.
The Hume Winter Music Festival returns this year with an explosion of brilliant artists from the world of music, showcasing a multitude of musical genres and cultures. Celebrating the musical and cultural diversity of Hume City, the festival features a wide variety of performances featuring music, dance and more.
The Crime & Justice Festival, held annually at Abbotsford Convent, is an event that brings together the public, writers, social commentators, judicial luminaries and legal professionals. Held to celebrate writing in the fields of justice and human rights, it features guest writers in the genre of crime fiction.
The State of Design Festival, presented by the Victorian State Government, offers a diverse program of over 80 interactive events, exhibitions, workshops and talks. Held in Melbourne and regional Victoria, this year's festival is themed, 'Sampling the Future', highlighting how design can lead towards a better future.
The Scarf Festival, held primarily at the National Wool Museum in Geelong and various venues in Melbourne, offers a program of workshops and events that includes The Transformation Showcase, an exhibition of original scarves created by entrants using this year's theme of Transformation.

Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show
SUB12 is a Hobsons Bay arts event that features over 40 artists and 34 exhibitions held across 12 weeks in one great space, The Substation, which is located in Newport. Presented in four distinct exhibition blocks, each with its own opening night, the shows feature a diverse mix of emerging and established artists.
Daisy and Lizzie (my only friend) is an exhibition by Rebecca Pierce, held at Richmond's Blacksphere Fine Art. Based on her impressions of Daisy Bates and her companion Lizzie the bicycle lizard, her colourful imagery presents a storybook feel that also holds a starkly surreal agenda beneath the surface.
Cloud 19, presented as part of the State of Design Festival, is an exhibition that creates a futuristic landscape with over 15 design disciplines that are fused with electronic music. Showcasing 40 emerging and established designers from Melbourne and Sydney, it's held at 1000 £ Bend in Little Lonsdale Street.
The Cancer Council's Arts Awards Exhibition will be held at 120 Collins Street with the theme of Celebrating Life and Hope Through Art. Providing a creative voice for Australians touched by cancer, the moving exhibition brings together diverse and outstanding works from entrants of all ages.
The Truffaux Photobooth Car Exhibition, held at Yah-Yahs in Fitzroy, features a range of photos that were taken in the travelling photo booth using Lola, a 1954 Baby Austin. With an invitation for the public to take part in the arts project, the exhibition features photos taken during the car's Melbourne tour.
Another Side of Me, held at the foyer of the Queen Victoria Women's Centre, is an exhibition of creative art by the women of WIRE, the Women's Information and Referral Exchange. The exhibition explores and embraces the theme of womanhood, reflecting the inspiration to women offered by the group.
Laneway Commissions turns Melbourne's already unique laneways into a network of hidden treasures with contemporary public artworks by different artists scattered throughout the city, including Cathy Busby's, We Are Sorry, a study of the 2008 apologies to Aboriginal peoples in Australia and Canada.
The Family Mould, showing at Hawthorn's Town Hall Gallery, is an exhibition that continues Ilona Nelson's exploration into her self-identity. Prompted by the birth of her first child, which created time to reflect on the history of her family tree, her hand coloured photographs pay homage to her family album.
Lucidia, held at Fitzroy's Unpretentiously Underground, is an exhibition by Nom, a London based artist whose drawings and paintings explore somethings old and somethings new with images that portray female characters teetering along between the real and imaginary, with clown grins and pheasant moons.
Does my Art Look Good? is an art exhibition held at the Chapel on Station Gallery in Box Hill, which features the work of more than 20 artists who are members of the Gifford Arts Project, a program run by UnitingCare for local artists with disabilities. Artworks at the exhibition will be for sale.
Fox in a Box is a photographic installation by Rebecca McIntosh that tells the tale of the facetious character Flying Fox Woman, an urban legend and home-made superhero suffering from domestication. The installation can be seen at The Dolls House, a unique miniature gallery held in a shop window in Preston.
All About Birds is an exhibition presented by the Wildlife Art Society of Australia that features artwork by the group's many talented artists who've celebrated our feathered friends with works that include paintings and even sculptures using barbed wire and tin. It's held at the BOCA Gallery in Nunawading.
A Day in Pompeii, a special exhibit held at Melbourne Museum, depicts the daily life of one of the world's most extraordinary cities, Pompeii, which was destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. With over 250 objects, the exhibit includes an immersive 3D theatre.
The Salvador Dali Deseo Liquido Exhibition, held at Artiq Galleries in South Yarra, is an intimate collection of paintings and sculptures by the celebrated master of surrealism. Exhibited for the first time in Australia, and exclusively at Artiq Galleries, the authenticated works are free to view and all are for sale.
In The Black, held at Lauraine Diggins Fine Art Gallery in Caulfield North, is an exhibition of black and white imagery that showcases drawing, photography and prints from a variety of genres. The exhibition featuring work by many diverse artists, ranging from colonial to contemporary and aboriginal art.
The Independent Type, held at the State Library of Victoria, is an exhibition that celebrates the history of Victoria's literary culture with displays and exhibits that mark the progression of writing by exploring traditional Indigenous storytelling through to colonial classics and today's vibrant writing scene.
Open Days, Expos & Seminars
The Burnley Gardens Open Day, presented by Friends of Burnley Gardens, is a chance to enjoy Melbourne University's beautiful gardens in Richmond with a special day that offers demonstrations, gardening workshops and free talks with experts including John Patrick of Gardening Australia.
Melbourne Open House, which had a successful debut last year, is a free event that allows Melburnians and visitors to the city a rare opportunity to discover the often hidden wealth of design, architectural, engineering and historic 'gems' nestled around the city with iconic and lesser known treasures open to explore.
The Long Journey, held at the MCG's Long Room, is a special chance to join the group, Women of Melbourne, and explore the journeys of indigenous players in Australian football's history for over a century. Celebrating indigenous athletes, guests include Ernie Dingo and Melbourne Football Club's Indigenous players.
Furnitex & Decoration + Design, co-located at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, offers Australasia's most comprehensive furnishings Trade Fair with Furnitex presenting furniture and furniture and more, while Decoration + Design is an exclusive Trade Fair for Australian soft furnishing and interior products.
Performances & Theatre
Sunset Rising, presented by BarnDaw Productions and performed at St Kilda's Theatre Works, is a story about love in all its different forms and how that love can bring out the best and worst in all those who believe in it as it follows the journey of Rachael Green, a girl living life perhaps too fast and too hard.
The History Boys, the modern classic by Alan Bennet, which became a hit film, will be performed at Cromwell Road Theatre. The award winning play follows an unruly yet bright bunch of sixth-form grammar school boys as they come of age and discover life's foibles during the eighties in Thatcher's Britain.
Footsteps of a Nobody, performed at The Carlton Courthouse, is the very first rock-musical by Donna Williams and The Aspinauts. Half play, half musical, the performance traces the developmental milestones that are portrayed in the bestselling book, Nobody Nowhere; Autobiography of an Autistic Girl.
Jersey Boys, performed at the Princess Theatre, is the Broadway hit that charts the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons as the play takes a nostalgic look at how four blue-collar kids became one of the greatest successes in pop music history while showcasing the great songs they became famous for.
Art Revue, held at The Flying Duck in Prahran, is a weekly evening of entertainment that presents performances that that feature belly dancing and Indian dancers, mime, theatre artists and the exotic, along with the chance to be inspired and capture the night with drawing materials included with entry on the night.
Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story returns to Melbourne with a brand new production held at the Palms at Crown. The live music extravaganza, which has become one of the biggest hits on the stage, presents the story of the iconic singer with two hours of his greatest hits that inspired many other performers.
The Birthday Party, the classic play by Harold Pinter, will be performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at the Arts Centre's Fairfax Studio. Now regarded as a classic post-war drama, the play tells of how one man's life in a seaside boarding house is unsettled when two new lodgers arrive.
The Man from Mukinupin, written by one of Australia's greats of playwriting, Dorothy Hewett, will be performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at their Sumner Theatre in Southbank. The play, set in Mukinupin, east of the rabbit-proof fence, is a tale of forbidden love and the secrets within the community there.
Avenue Q is a new breed of musical, performed by a weird and wonderful mix of humans and puppets. Winner of three Broadway Tony Awards, the tasteless yet hilarious production is a cross between Sesame Street, the Muppet Show and any adult comedy you could shake a puppet at. Note: This is NOT a Kid's Show.
Classical, Choral & Recitals
The Melbourne Musicians will present a program of popular baroque music with performances by outstanding soloists, held at St Johns in Southgate. Featuring works by Bach Purcell and Torelli, Soprano Elena Xanthoudakis will also sing arias by Handel that include Let the Bright Seraphim.
Entertainment & Nightlife
Charity Events
The Heart of Variety Ball, held at Melbourne Town Hall, is a special gala event that's held to raise money for Variety, an organisation dedicated to transforming the lives of children with special needs. Celebrating the origins of Variety, the evening includes entertainment from John Paul Young and other guests.
The Red Hot Cocktail Party is a special evening held at Flinders Lane's Randy Dragon, which will raise funds to help support the Trek 4 Tibet challenge. Gusts are invited to attend the night wearing red, where they'll be treated to finger food, prizes throughout the night and funky laid back tunes.
Live Concerts & Gigs
Bobby Flynn will be performing the last of a limited series of intimate shows in Victoria with a performance held at Queen Street's Blue Diamond. Having been recently ensconced in the studio, the show is a chance to hear the work of the Australian Idol finalist before his new record is released later in the year.
Luvland will be appearing at Dizzy's Jazz Club in Richmond, playing their unique style of music that fuses psychedelic funk and groove with a heady brew of dance, reggae and experimental jazz with wild Hendrix like guitar from Chris Harold and the Coltraine inspiring sax of Paul Van Ross.
Extended Family will be appearing at various venues to launch their new single, 'Yesterday Morning', a punchy song that's more hard hitting than the band's other songs, while retaining the sense of fun, vibrancy and energy the band is known for. Something they also bring to the stage with each performance.
Rosaline Yuen will perform at The Empress Hotel in Fitzroy North where she'll be joined by other guests that include Hannah Acfield, Michael Meeking and Lisa Salvo. With an afternoon of performances by talented up and comers, music performed will range from jazz and pop to rock and folk.
Hell Freezes Over, held at the HiFi Bar and Ballroom in the city, is Melbourne's first Winter Hard Rock and Metal Festival. Featuring a line up that includes the bands My Burning Empire, Electrik Dynamite and Bronson, E-Tickets to the event allow guests to support their fave band by nominating them online.
The Butterfly Effect will be appearing at the Commercial Hotel in South Morang for one night as an extra Victorian date to their 'Final Conversation' tour when they'll perform songs from their third album, Final Conversation of Kings. They'll be supported by the Melbourne band, Calling All Cars as special guests.
The Bucket Room, held at Grumpy's Green in Fitzroy, is a night of entertainment held weekly with live original showcase that features original bands, solo artists, songwriters and duos. Free to attend, gold donations are welcome for your favourite band on the night when the buckets are passed around.
Burlesque & Cabaret
The ADFI Burlesque Ball, held at the ADFI Studio in Bayswater, is a spectacular night of Burlesque entertainment that includes dancers, male Belly dancer with an accompanying Python (ahem), jazz dance, theatrical performances and guest artists such as Gemma Purdy, Ferdi and the famous Mister Burlesque.
The Burlesque Hour LEGENDS! is a series of performances held at Flinders Lane's fortyfivedownstairs that presents the best of Burlesque with an international line up of legendary performers. With a special guest performer heading the bill each fortnight, shows currently feature the renowned vocalist, Paul Capsis.
Curly Girl Burlesque, held at Fitzroy's Burlesque Bar each week, is a fun, cheeky and risque show, which began as an Hours Level research project by Claire Haywood, and has since gone on to become a hit that celebrates the burlesque of yesteryear with a contemporary touch that challenges perceptions of women.
Cinema
The Bayside Film Festival, held at the Palace Cinema of Brighton Bay, offers a program of special screenings that include shorts, features, youth documentaries and digital stories made through the Festival's filmmaking program. The festival also features workshops and Q&As with notable filmmakers.
West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a monthly film night held at the Junction Hotel in Newport. Held every second Tuesday of the month, the film nights are a chance to see fantastic short films made by local talent and also to network with local filmmakers and actors.
Comedy
French and Saunders will be appearing in Melbourne for the first time ever with live shows held at the Palais Theatre. Britain's most celebrated and iconic female comedians will be dishing up a show that features the best of characters and sketches from across three successful decades along with new material.
The Impro Cave returns for another great run of entertainment to help beat the winter chills with a toasty warm venue at The Penny Black in Brunswick and the hottest improvised entertainment. This year's series of improvised shows are ones of exploration and adventure with a new show each time.
Comedy@Spleen is a comedy night at Spleen Bar in Bourke Street, where you can step out to enjoy a great night out with an eclectic mix of Melbourne's comedy scene featuring established personalities and comedy legends from radio and television with guests such as Glenn Robbins, Corinne Grant and others.
Melbourne For Kids
Donkey Shelter Open Day - The Donkey Shelter in Eltham, a non-profit organisation that helps orphaned and mistreated donkeys, will be holding an open day where you can enjoy a special Christmas in July celebration and have your photo taken with their wonderful donkeys the shelter cares for.
Frozen in Time - Get set to discover a Winter Wonderland at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat these school holidays. Now a signature event, Winter Wonderland this year offers an interactive exhibit with walk-in zone complete with huge ice sculptures depicting the gold-rush era along with some great holiday activities.
The Gallery Ark, a touring exhibition designed for children, aims to encourage a sense of curiosity by presenting some of the treasures of the NGV collection. Telling the story of Noah's Ark as seen through the different religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It's now showing at Langwarrin's McClelend Gallery.
Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination is a special exhibit at Scienceworks where you can discover the science behind the Star Wars films. The exhibition features authentic costumes and props from the entire Star Wars saga, including the iconic Darth Vader's menacing attire.
Circus Shows
Silvers Grand Magic Circus will be holding performances at Burvale Hotel's Car Park in Nunawading. Established in 1976, Silvers Grand Magic Circus offers a great show for the whole family, with everything from jugglers and clowns to acrobats, international performers and more.

The Atheist Society will be holding a free public lecture at East Melbourne's Unitarian Hall. Followed by questions and discussion, the event is free.
SoFiA, the Sea of Faith Network, will present a public lecture at the Meeting Room of Carlton Library. Promoting an open exploration of religion, spirituality and meaning, this month's lecture features former Anthroposophist, Steven Higson discussing "Rudolf Steiner: Fraud or Prophet?"
The Summerhill Dance Group hold a social event for people of all ages and backgrounds each week at the Oakhill Community Centre in Reservoir. Supported by Darebin Council, the dance evenings feature music from a professional D.J. playing strict tempo music for people of all dance level skills.
Speakers Forum | Soapbox Oratory - Soapbox orators (that means you if you've something to say) can take turns speaking on various topics and viewpoints on the State Library Lawns. Questions, comments, heckling and interjections are welcome from all, simply turn up on the day to participate or listen.

The Smith Family Winter Appeal is a chance to help change the story for disadvantaged Aussie kids by helping The Smith Family raise money for their Winter Appeal. By making a donation you can support The Smith Family in offering disadvantaged kids educational support to break the poverty cycle.
Call To Arms is the Cancer Council's annual national event to raise funds and awareness of cancer, a disease that effects 1 in 2 men by the age of 85. Sporting clubs across Victoria are invited to take part by nominating a day in July when they can hold a Call To Arms match to help raise money for the Cancer Council.
