Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday September 28 to Monday October 4, 2010.
This week... there's a bit of the old Ooh La La in Melbourne with the Paris to Provence Festival at Como House celebrating all things French with two days of music, workshops, markets and more. There's also quite a bit of Ooh La La about, what with the ongoing Melbourne Fringe going hand in hand with Melbourne's already popular Burlesque scene, so keep the lads on a leash ladies because the air's more than thick with fishnets.
Festival Malaysia takes place at Queensbridge Square with a day of Bollywood dancing, Malaysian music and the like, while Ye Olde Kryal Castle, that place in Ballarat that has a souvenir shop with Ye Olde Keyrings like the Knights of yore once used, will be hosting the Medieval Festival with entertainment of all kinds, including jousting for those who prefer sticks to balls and need a break from the Director's Cut of the Grand Final.

Major Events
Paris to Provence, the Melbourne French Festival held at Como House in South Yarra, will transform the historic building and grounds into a traditional French village with beautifully decorated stalls, kids' activities for 'les enfants', fashion workshops, cooking classes and live performances.

Medieval Festival, held at Kryal Castle in Ballarat, offers two days of fabulous entertainment with fun for the whole family. The festival can take you back in time to witness great activities that include jousting tournaments, a grand parade, children's games, market stalls and more.

Victorian Seniors Festival Week features free and low-cost events held across Victoria and at the festival hub of Melbourne Town Hall. Celebrating the golden years and how to make the most of them, the festival includes musical performances, exhibitions, workshops and special displays.

Melbourne Fringe Festival is a celebration of Melbourne's vibrant and quirky arts culture with an extensive program of music, theatre, exhibitions and much more. Showcasing the talents of independent artists and performers at various venues, the festival includes performances for kids.

The Northcote Kids Festival, held over two weeks during September School Holidays at Northcote Town Hall, offers a selection of theatre, music, magic, and workshops for children and their families with more than 35 performances in an inspiring program for kids of all ages.

Wildflower Festival, held at Cranbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens, celebrates Spring when the bush land is carpeted with beautiful flowers. With tours to explore the bushland, workshops on how to create a native garden and more, the festival includes an extensive school holiday program.

Royal Melbourne Show, a highlight of School Holidays, provides entertainment for all ages. With something for everyone, from extreme rides and hundreds of showbags to choose from to food and rides, the Melbourne Show also has animal, woodchop contests and many more attractions.

The Tesselaar Tulip Festival, held in Silvan an hour away from Melbourne, is a vibrant festival that celebrates Spring with fields that feature more than half a million beautiful flowers. With themed weekends held throughout the festival, attractions include concerts, kids' days and more.

The Melbourne International Festival of Brass features recitals and concert performances from some of Australia's finest musicians and brass ensembles. The festival program includes musicians' forums, concerts, workshops, jam sessions and more at several venues throughout Melbourne.

Melbourne Music, presented by the City of Melbourne, brings musical performances to laneways, trams, trains and squares with free concerts, public lectures and workshops. Featuring grass-roots and internationally renowned artists, it includes the search for Melbourne's best busker.

Heathcote Wine & Food Festival is a foodie's feast of events and attractions with over 50 wineries showcased at Heathcote Showgrounds. Along with food and produce exhibitors, highlights include Tasting Seminars, live music and interactive entertainment for kids with Fusion.

The Asian Food Festival, returning after last year's hiatus, celebrates Spring and the diverse range of Asian cuisine available in Melbourne. One of Melbourne's most popular culinary celebrations, special dinners, offers and events will be held at Melbourne's best Asian restaurants.

Digital Fringe, held as part of Melbourne Fringe, is a visual delight with imagery and film showcased throughout Melbourne in venues that include libraries, shopfronts and more, presenting the work of emerging and established artists in unique, and often novel, environments.

Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show
Objects of navigation, showing at fortyfivedownstairs in Flinders Lane, is an exhibition by Russell Craig, exploring themes of movement and navigation with beautiful drawings that were inspired by Melanesian paddles used for propelling outrigger craft and canoes through water.

Roads, held at Brunswick Street Gallery, is a photographic exhibition of images by Dominik Staszowski. Taken over a 7-month period, the photos detail life and experiences through 30 countries around the world with the collection consisting of works capturing both people and landscapes.

Vern Sherman Drinks Tea and Other Tales, one of three exhibitions held at Collingwood gallery Off the Kerb, is a presentation by I & The Others, who have used a variety of media to created a series of works inspired by three and a half months spent in the United States last year.

Stitches & Strokes, an exhibition held at Kinross House in Toorak, is a beautiful presentation of textiles. With works by artists Lyn Guy, Bridget Frawley and Margaret Craven, the pieces display the technique of machine embroidery using silk fabrics and acrylic on canvas.

Through the Cipher's Interval, held at Bundoora's La Trobe University, is the first of a series of muti-media installations by Lyn Plummer, which will exhibit throughout Australia. Using video, light and colour, the works examine how people interact in relation to religion and art.

Virtual Encounter, presented at Melbourne's Queen Victoria Women's Centre, is an exhibition of recent works by Julia Bilecki. Her latest works are urban landscapes, her own rendition of the physical elements in an urban area or city, focusing on the daily dynamics of city living.

Visage, held at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre, is Warburton's inaugural Portrait Competition featuring people who live, work and play in the Upper Yarra region. With works that are drawn, painted, sculpted and photographed, the exhibition depicts the lively, interesting and quirky characters.

ABBAWORLD, held at Federation Square, is an amazing multimedia exhibition that enables visitors to experience the music and magic of ABBA with state-of-the-art technology making a highly interactive experience where visitors can journey through ABBAWORLD'S 25 environments.

The Amazing Bodies Exhibition, held at Waterfront City in Docklands, is a chance to explore nature in a unique way with amazing displays of natural anatomical wonders. Using real body specimens, perfectly preserved, the exhibition shows muscular and bone structure in a captivating display.

Phar Lap will be the focus of a special exhibition held at the Melbourne Museum. Marking the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup and the 80th anniversary of Phar Lap's historic win, his impressive skeleton will be on display, on loan from Wellington's Te Papa Tongarewa Museum.

Left Behind, held at Fitzroy North's Red Gallery, details the traces of life that linger in abandoned homes. Worn carpet, broken blinds and fragmented windows testify to years of occupation, while scattered possessions tell something of the nature of inhabitants once present and what they left behind.

Conversing, an exhibition by David Tolley held at MARS Gallery in Port Melbourne, features artwork in contrast to his paintings over the last decade with his recent works examining the essence rather than elaboration of the structures and references held within his works.

Burke and Wills: Terra Incognita is a chance to discover the remarkable story of Burke and Wills' ill-fated Victorian Exploring Expedition. Marking the expedition's 150th anniversary, the exhibition at the State Library of Victoria includes original paintings, sketches and artefacts.

Tim Burton: The Exhibition is a special showcase of works brought to Melbourne direct from direct from The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Held at ACMI in Federation Square, the exhibition brings together over 700 works that helped create Burton's films, including drawings, puppets and more.

Expos, Launches & Open Days
World Animal Day, celebrated at Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary in Willowmavin, is a fun-filled day with kids activities, a silent auction, animal friendly trade stalls, farm tours and dog agility demos, animal expert presentations and much more. Entry to the special celebration is free.

The Donkey Shelter in Eltham, a non-profit organisation that helps orphaned and mistreated donkeys, often hold open days where you can enjoy a day out fro the family and see the wonderful donkeys the shelter cares for. Many of their open days include afternoon tea and kids' activities.

Seniors Week Festival will be celebrated at South Yarra's historic Como House with exclusive events for Senior's Card holders only. During the festival Seniors are invited to join guides for a mansion tour and choose from one of three delicious meal packages at discounted prices.

Car Shows
Euroa Show'n'Shine is a great event for car enthusiasts and families with car and motorbike displays that include an Abrams Tank, special show cars, race cars, model power boats, face painting, a jumping castle, trade stands, craft market, music and more. Entry for the public is by gold coin.

Pet Shows
Dogs Victoria present Championship and Breed Shows, offering a great way to look at various dog breeds up close and speak to breeders and fanciers about the pros and con of owning a particular breed of dog. Most events include special agility competitions and entertaining parades.

Performances & Theatre
Hairspray, the ultimate feel good musical based on the cult movie by John Waters, will hit the stage in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre. Set in the USA town of 1960s Baltimore, the production follows the life of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger passion to dance.

Send in the Clowns, held at South Yarra's Irene Mitchell Studio, is a chilling theatrical debut from emerging theatre company 0 Potential. A multi-form theatre production, the performance combines clowning, puppetry and music to explore the differentiation between fantasy and reality.

Steaming, held at showing at Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre in Preston, is the heart-warming play by novelist and playwright Nell Dunn, which centres around six women from diverse backgrounds who when hearing their beloved refuge is about to close, unite and try to save it.

For Whom the Bell Tolls, performed at Melbourne Fringe's Festival Hub of The Lithuanian Club in North Melbourne, is Telia Nevile's first solo show which explores high school where survival of the fittest still reigns supreme and the halls of learning are full of pitfalls, peaks and public scorn.

PaPer Man & The 499th Day is a double bill performance held at St Kilda's Theatre Works as part of the Girls at Work series. Presented by Liquid Skin Peninsula Performing Arts Company, the performances feature physical theatre and contemporary dance in an intensely powerful production.

Busting Out! is a laugh out loud musical comedy spectacular that keeps abreast of the times. Held at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the show follows two lubbily-jubbily ladies as they unleash their playful puppies and walk abreast down mammary lane with uplifting bouncy songs and sketches.

The Man Under the Bed, presented by Controlled Chaos Theatre Company, is a fresh, fun and sexy comedy from writer and director Matt Young. Held at Fitzroy's Palookaville, it follows Kate as she takes Ben home for the first time when they both discover an unexpected visitor is already there.

Sugar, based on the classic film, Some Like it Hot, features Mitchell Butel and Matt Hetherington in the comic dual roles of Jerry (Daphne) and Joe (Josephine) and Christie Whelan in the role of the sexy songstress. Performances ar held at the Arts Centre's State Theatre.

Coma and the Good Times, performed at Melbourne University, is an original work written and directed by Syn FM and Channel 31 personality Matthew Ziccone. Innovative and intriguing, the show follows the two simultaneous plays and realities, raising questions about life's many meanings.

Man of La Mancha, presented by CLOC Theatre with performances held at St Kilda's National Theatre, is the musical tale of Don Quixote and his adventures with his loyal squire Sancho Panza as they fight windmills, mirrors and more in their quest to save damsels and right wrongs.

West Side Story, one of the most iconic musicals, is held at Melbourne's Regent Theatre with Joey McKneely's vibrant new stage production of the classic dance musical having already met rave reviews overseas. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, it features a spectacular orchestra.

Classical, Choral & Recitals
The Parrot Factory, held at the CUB Malthouse's Merlyn Theatre, is a presentation by Victorian Youth Opera, which follows the adventures of a young girl who sets out with a parrot and a private detective to discover the treasure of an old widow, the parrot's previous owner.

The Salvation Army Veterans Band will be performing at BMW Edge in Federation Square where they'll hold a free concert of classic and contemporary wind band music. The concert will feature Gustav Holst's First Suite in E-Flat and a transcription for wind band by Earl Slocum.

Burlesque, Cabaret & Dance
Atrocity, held at Burlesque Bar in Fitzroy, is a shocking theatrical soap opera of sex, violence, beauty, horror and psychological play that is not for the faint of heart. Shock performance with music, song, dance and the art of wicked tease, the show is a night of Burlesque du Grand Guignol.

Kitty Bang: Through The Magnifying Glass, performed at The Order of Melbourne is the all-singing, all-dancing day in the life of the red-headed diva. La Petite Mort, presented at Theatre Works in St Kilda, is a raunchy cabaret romp through sex and sexuality. French for 'The Little Death', Isabel Hertaeg's play about The Orgasm uses cabaret to explore sexuality, love, science, and more with comically shocking tales.

Entertainment & Nightlife
Jagermeister Independent Music Awards, held at Melbourne's Forum Theatre, honours risk takers of the music world and acknowledges that artistic accomplishment does not always go hand-in-hand with commercial success with performances by Independent bands including British India.

Whole Lotta Love the Led Zeppelin Celebration brings together 20 of Australia's finest rock artists, including John Swan and Dave Larkin, with a performance at St Kilda's Palais Theatre that recreates the pure excitement, energy and passion of Led Zeppelin for a one-night-only spectacular.

80 Gigs in 80 days is a marathon live music event by Nicolas Jorquera of Melbourne band 'I Heart Cusack,' which will see over 160 bands performing over 80 successive days at 80 different venues all over Melbourne and Regional Victoria with the events filmed for a documentary.

Melbourne Jazz Jammers, held at Collingwood's Leinster Arms Hotel, offers a great opportunity for musicians of any background to drop in, join in, listen in, meet other musicians and relax over a drink as the evening unfolds with anything from bebop to swing, blues, Latin and more.

House Of Blues, held at the Royal Standard Hotel in West Melbourne, is a special evening of music presented each week by the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society. With a featured artist invited to play each wee, performances are followed by an open jam session for all musicians.

Cinema
ATOM Awards, which recognises the best work in a wide range of media including animation, television and film, will showcase the work of finalists from Australian and New Zealand with free screenings of packaged programs held on the Big Screen at Federation Square.

Dolphins and Whales 3D, screening at Melbourne Museum's IMAX Cinema, is the latest underwater epic by Jean-Michel Cousteau and the Mantello Brothers. Narrated by Daryl Hannah, the film features humpback whales, belugas, orcas and more filmed across the world over three years.

Comedy & Magic
Theatresports, Melbourne's longest running improvisation comedy show, celebrates its 25th season with Silver Jubilee performances held at St Kilda's National Theatre where old meets new as a handful of Theatresports veterans take to the stage with upcoming improvisers barely as old as the show.

Comedy With Grace, held weekly at the Grace Darling Hotel in Collingwood, is a platform for some of Australia's biggest names in comedy to test new material or polish some old, as well as showcase the best new up and comers from around the country with a new line-up every week.

Melbourne For Kids
Monty & Melville, held as part of the Melbourne Fringe at The Dog Theatre in Footscray, is a guide dog puppet adventure about assistance puppies in training. The show follows a Guide Dog puppy in training as he sets out to learn who stole Melville, the plastic donation collection dog.

Short Pants No Holes, held at La Mama in Carlton, is a series of improvised tales for children by Barking Spider Visual Theatre. A great experience for children and their families to engage and play in story-creation, everyone has the opportunity to create within the show using objects.

Little Big Shots, Australia's major travelling children's film festival, will be appearing at The Whitehorse Centre in Nunawading. Perfect for families and kids, the festival's showcases the best in filmmaking for children, and some even by children, with films from Australia and overseas.

A Spring Fair will be held by Barry Beckett Children's Centre in Coburg where all are welcome to come and enjoy a great day out for the family. Entry to the event is free and it includes a jumping castle, face-painting, mini-golf and craft activities, a sausage sizzle, market stalls and more.

Family Day at Collingwood Children's Farm is a special children's event held each month with each family day featuring a theme that matches activities provided for kids. Activities include hayrides, a BBQ and much more to make it a great day out for the kids and family.

Disney's High School Musical, performed by Altona City Theatre, brings the smash hit movie to the stage. Held at Altona Theatre, the performance follows the social upheaval that ensues when members of different cliques break rank by performing together.

Circus
Perry Bros Circus, Australia's oldest circus, will be appearing in Dingley Village, offering quality entertainment to please the entire family. With wire walkers, Jugglers, Whip crackers, balancing acts and more the circus also features performing ponies and camels along with their very funny clowns.

Circus Sunrise, an action-packed show for all the family, will be appearing with performances held in Sunshine. A true family circus with lineage going back to 1648, the performances of Circus Sunrise feature juggling, acrobatics and whip-cracking excitement!

Silvers Grand Magic Circus will be holding performances in Nunawading. Established in 1976, Silvers Grand Magic Circus offers a great show for people of all ages with performers including everything from jugglers and clowns to acrobats, international performers and more.

Markets, Fetes and Fairs
The Model Engineering Exhibition, presented by The Melbourne Society of Model & Experimental Engineers, takes place at Clayton's Monash University in Clayton with displays of all forms of model engineering such as steam and hot air engines, model boats, trains, aircraft and more.

Mornington Peninsula Orchid Society will be holding an orchid show in Centro Karingal shopping centre where members of the society will be selling orchids at good prices. There will also be culture and potting demonstrations held by local orchid experts regularly during the event.

Frankly My Dear Vintage Fair features stall holders selling Vintage Men's and Women's Clothing and Accessories. Held at Geelong's Nash Hotel, the fair includes Soul DJ's spinning records, Vintage Giveaways, NASH noodles and delicious South Melbourne market Dim Sims.

Fringe Fair celebrates the Melbourne Fringe Festival with an exciting event featuring the famous Artists' Market with works from over 40 artists and a farmers market. Held at The Substation in Newport, the fair includes an outdoor stage with bands, food vendors and more.
