Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday October 19 to Monday October 25, 2010.
This week... there's a range of events showcasing cultures from across the globe, with one such multicultural shindig being the Cuban Jazz Festival at Rochford Winery, while in Camperdown you can get your coif on with the Cruise Rockabilly Festival offering a weekend of nostalgic entertainment.
Spring also shines brightly (in theory, anyway) with the Bright Spring Festival celebrating the change in seasons along with the Whitehorse Spring Festival. There's also a celebration of our wonderful world with the Green Earth Festival in Clifton hill offering a range of events that include a climate change panel, which might be able to explain why the aforementioned Spring Festivals will most likely require winter-wear for those attending.

Major Events
Green Earth Festival, presented by The Wilderness Society and held at Athol Gill Centre in Clifton Hill, offers a diverse and interactive three days of events that include a climate change panel, green earth expo, family fun, guest speakers, sustainable picnic lunch and much more.

Bright Spring Festival showcases the vibrant sights, attractions and best of Bright with a series of events that include theatre, special dinners, film screenings and more. Highlights include the Halloween Fireworks Spectacular and Concert, open gardens tours, workshops and more.

Whitehorse Spring Festival, held at Nunawading's Whitehorse Civic Centre, celebrates diversity, creativity and community with a day of entertainment and fun for all ages. Attractions on the day include children's entertainers, performances and the Nunawading Art and Craft Market.

Festival Indonesia, held at Federation Sqaure, showcases the culture, tourism and talents of Indonesia with a weekend of food, performances, children's activities and music and craft workshops. Highlights also include the Trade Exhibition with fashion, jewellery, furniture and textiles.

Himalaya Festival, a Snow Lion Himalayan Relief Event, held at Kew's Genazzano FCJ College, is an entertaining fundraiser for the victims of the recent natural disasters in Tibet, as well as a Tibetan Cultural Event to support Rinpoche's dharma activities in Australia.

The Bendigo Agricultural Show, held at Bendigo's Prince of Wales Showgrounds, presents two great days of action and entertainment for the whole family with a range of attractions and entertainment that includes circus performances, animal displays and carnival rides.

Ararat Show, held at the R.T. White Raceway, showcases the best of Ararat's country life with a wide range of events and attractions including horses and a pet show, floral displays and exhibitions. The day also offers fun for the whole family with rides, tractor pulling and more.

Swiss Italian Festa, held in Hepburn Springs and Daylesford, celebrates the heritage of Swiss and Italian settlers who arrived more than 150 years ago. With an enormous program of events, the festival features sports tournaments, open studio tours, exhibitions and more.

Music & Arts Festivals
Camperdown Cruise Rockabilly Festival, held throughout the historic tree lined main street of Camperdown, is a retro-fest extravaganza featuring 12 live rockabilly bands, a vintage fashion parade, a flea market with 50's collectables, dance competitions, art exhibitions and more.

Cuban Jazz Festival, held at Coldstream's Rochford Winery, is a combination of live vineyard jazz, salsa, bongo's, conga and D.J's spread over two main arenas. Set before the lake on the vineyard stage, salsa dance lessons are held before each performance to inspire wallflowers to tap their petals.

Hume Festival of Music offers a program of concerts and special events showcasing remarkable music from around the world at various venues within Hume. Celebrating the cultural diversity of Hume City, the festival is held in Spring to also celebrate the many open parks and gardens.

Melbourne International Arts Festival, Australia's premier celebration of performing arts, offers a program that draws on the talents of some of the finest artists and performers from across the world. With dance, theatre, music, visual arts, and more, it's held at various venues.

Melbourne Stencil Festival is a celebration of stencil art taking place at Melbourne's 1000 Pound Bend and other venues. Examining one of the most divisive sub cultures, the festival a charity auction along with forums, workshops, an award show and workshops for adults and kids.

Film Festivals
Celluloid Soup, the Jewish Short Film Festival presented by the Jewish Museum of Australia, will hold their Gala Awards and Screening Night at the historic Astor Theatre in St Kilda. Films screened on the night have been created using festival workshops in writing, directing and acting.

Melbourne Macedonian Film Festival, with screenings held at Hoyts Cinemas at Northland and Melbourne Central, showcases local and international films made by Macedonian filmmakers with a four-day program of feature films, documentaries, animations and short films.

Greek Film Festival, held at Palace Cinema Como in South Yarra, presents a selection of contemporary films direct from Greece with this year's event offering and extended program that includes documentaries, short films, comedies and even two gruesome gems for fans of zombie movies.

Peter Jankowski, a member of the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria, will be exhibiting at the Firestation Print Studio in Armadale. Titled, Dreaming of an Unconscious Mind, the exhibition features recent works that display an inspiring range of images, evocative of inner thoughts.

Playing House, an exhibition by Melbourne artist, Kevin Chin, showing at the West Wing of Melbourne Central, draws on Chin's own renovation experience to use painting and sculptural processes with home renovating materials to create works that include a vinyl laminate life-size bear rug.

Graeme Base, the much loved illustrator of the hit book Animalia, will be exhibiting at Port Melbourne's MARS Gallery where there will be a selection of artworks for viewing and sale, taken from his upcoming book, The Legend of the Golden Snail, a seafaring fantasy rich with his beautiful style.

Mind Your Head is the 27th Annual Prahran Mission Art Exhibition, held in Albert Park at the Foyer Gallery of Gasworks Arts Park. Showcasing the artworks produced by participants of Prahran Mission's art programs, the program covers a range of competitive visual art courses.

Husk Liberty Exhibition, held at Husk's Albert Park Store, is the latest exhibition of textiles, paintings and designs from gifted Melbourne artist and designer Sara Thorn. The exhibition includes a captivating array of watercolours, digital collage prints on cotton and inspiring hand embroidery.

Hive, one of three exhibitions showing at red gallery in Fitzroy North, is the first collaborative exhibition by Kate Zizys and Kim McDonald, Gippsland-based artists whose works feature prints, installations and drawings inspired by ideas of hive-mentalities and the shared motif of bees.

Stuck on St Kilda, presented by The Essence of St Kilda, is a public art installation, held outside and accessible to all. Featuring entries from the 2010 Essence of St Kilda Word and Photo Prizes, new and established photographers and writers have uniquely expressed how they view St Kilda.

Killing Time, held at the gallery Melbourne's Kings Artist Run Initiative, is the premier retrospective of Christopher Köller's video practice in Australia. Filled with images of sex, death, golf and surfing, the exhibition screening, which runs at over an hour, is populated with a host of rebel characters.

Swaddle, held at Fitzroy's SJS Gallery, is a group exhibition by Victorian female artists, whose works in fibre and textile aim to stimulate and challenge ideas around old cultural practices. The works featured explore the interplay between bondage and release, comfort and constraint.

Somewhat Different, held at the gallery of RMIT, is an international touring exhibition showcases the work of over 100 key German and European designers. Celebrating the diversity of function, the Melbourne exhibition also features Screen Gown by Australian designers.

The Wild Awards, held at the Barn Gallery of Montsalvat in Eltham, is an exhibition and sale of stunning 2 and 3 dimensional artworks created by members of the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia, an artist group that aims to foster the study, practice, and appreciation of all wildlife art.

The Bald Archy Prize Exhibition, Australia's most popular comic portrait competition and alternative to the prestigious Archibald, will be showing at Prahran's Chapel Off Chapel. Judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude, the works range from the hilarious to the bizarrely vulgar.

Mortality, showing at Southbank's Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, features works by some of the world's leading artists, exploring life's journey from the beginning to the end. Part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, it includes works by Aleks Danko, Tacita Dean and others.

The Amazing Bodies Exhibition, held at Waterfront City in Docklands, is a chance to explore nature in a unique way with amazing displays of natural anatomical wonders. Using real body specimens, perfectly preserved, the exhibition shows muscular and bone structure in a captivating display.

Phar Lap will be the focus of a special exhibition held at the Melbourne Museum. Marking the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup and the 80th anniversary of Phar Lap's historic win, his impressive skeleton will be on display, on loan from Wellington's Te Papa Tongarewa Museum.

Restoration of the B-24 Liberator Bomber, Australia's last B-24 Liberator long range heavy bomber and one of only eight remaining in the world, is available for public viewing with people invited to watch the restoration taking place in a World War II hangars on the old Werribee airfield.

The Beautiful Losers, appearing at The butterfly Club in South Melbourne, have been horrifying, thrilling and amusing Australian audiences for the past five years. Featuring Mark Jones, Karlis Zaid and Mike McLeish from 'Keating - The Musical', they musically weave tales of the evil deeds of Men.

Mackillop the Musical, is a new and topical performance chronicling the incredible life Mary MacKillop. Premiering at The Besen Centre in Burwood to coincide with the canonisation of Australia's first saint, the play by Xavier Brouwer features a cast of 80 and a 25 piece live orchestra.

The Laramie Project, performed at Hallam Community Theatre, is the play by Moises Kaufman that draws on public interviews to explore the death of Matthew Sheppard, an American student who in 1998 was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a fence and left to die, simply because he was gay.

Oh Well Never Mind Bye, performed by Red Stitch Theatre in St Kilda, is the Australian Premiere of by Steven Lally's engrossing political drama. Set amidst the 2005 terrorist attacks in London, the play questions the ethics of modern journalism and the pressures that drive the media.

Life Without Me is award-winning playwright Daniel Keene's debut play for Melbourne Theatre Company. Performed at the Sumner Theatre in Southbank, the play follows the lives of guests in a rundown hotel in an eccentric fable about taking up residence and trying to move on.

Shred For Skateistan is an exciting live music event, held at Melbourne's Ding Dong Lounge, with all proceeds going to the charity Skateistan to support skating programs for young people in Afghanistan. Featuring Melbourne based bands, performers include The White Goods and Skyland.

Alysia Manceau, performing at The Builders Arms in Fitzroy, has a unique style that blends alternative country with folk revivalism. With performances that draw comparisons with Neil Young, Neko Case and PJ Harvey, she'll be supported by The Velocettes and The Busty Insects.

[Me] and Mr Percival, will be performing on the main stage of Federation Square as part of Fed Square Live, a series of free performances. Groove Eddy will be performing at The Wesley Anne in Northcote to launch his new album, Overload. With airplay on PBS and Having received the coveted Radio National album of the week, the roots folk artist will be joined on the night by award winning songwriter Leticia Maher.

The Bohemian Masquerade Ball, held at Thornbury Theatre, is a bi-annual event that celebrates underground culture with a grand carnival of independent music, extreme circus, neo-vaudeville and art installations along with sideshow carnie games, circus rovers and much more.

Rufus Wainwright, appearing at The Palais in St Kilda, will give Melbournians an intimate evening of solo splendour with nothing more than a grand piano, a folder full of rich, thoughtful songs, and the voice that he's become much-loved for as he performs songs from his latest album.

Car Park Parties will be held at the Laurel Hotel in Ascot Vale to celebrate Cox Plate and Derby Day during the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival. Featuring live performances by Superdudes and DJ's, the nights offer great entertainment close to both Moonee Valley and Flemington.

80 Gigs in 80 days is a marathon live music event by Nicolas Jorquera of Melbourne band 'I Heart Cusack,' which will see over 160 bands performing over 80 successive days at 80 different venues all over Melbourne and Regional Victoria with the events filmed for a documentary.

Melbourne Jazz Jammers, held at Collingwood's Leinster Arms Hotel, offers a great opportunity for musicians of any background to drop in, join in, listen in, meet other musicians and relax over a drink as the evening unfolds with anything from bebop to swing, blues, Latin and more.

House Of Blues, held at the Royal Standard Hotel in West Melbourne, is a special evening of music presented each week by the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society. With a featured artist invited to play each wee, performances are followed by an open jam session for all musicians.

Cinema
U23D will return to Melbourne's IMAX Cinema with a limited run of screenings that brings viewers the thrill and pulsing energy of a live U2 stadium concert. Filmed in South America during the band's Vertigo Tour, the film was made with the largest collection of 3D camera technology ever used.

ATOM Awards, which recognises the best work in a wide range of media including animation, television and film, will showcase the work of finalists from Australian and New Zealand with free screenings of packaged programs held on the Big Screen at Federation Square.

The Breast Darn Show in Town, a comedy gala held at Melbourne Town Hall to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation, features Corinne Grant as host with guests Fiona O'Loughlin, Tom Gleeson, Denise Scott and others performing stand up, improvisation and musical theatre.

Theatresports, Melbourne's longest running improvisation comedy show, celebrates its 25th season with Silver Jubilee performances held at St Kilda's National Theatre where old meets new as a handful of Theatresports veterans take to the stage with upcoming improvisers barely as old as the show.

Melbourne For Kids
Poppykettle Children's Festival, held at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, celebrates performing arts for children in kindergarten and primary school. The unique festival offers a comprehensive program with a diverse range of activities including concerts and workshops.

The SandDragon's Tail, presented as part of Carlton's La Mama for Kids theatre series, is an inspiring children's show by Curious Legends. A mythical story about a young child who makes a dragon of sand on the beach, the performance uses puppetry, dance, live music and theatre.

Circus
Silvers Grand Magic Circus will be holding performances in Noble Park. Established in 1976, Silvers Grand Magic Circus offers a great show for people of all ages with performers including everything from jugglers and clowns to acrobats, international performers and more.

Markets, Fetes and Fairs
Magnolia Square is a boutique fair that showcases women's and children's attire, homewares, jewellery and more. They'll be holding their popular fair at Malvern Town Hall where you'll find the work of some of Melbourne's best and most talented designers with a wide variety of quality crafts.

Kilmore Antiques and Collectable Fair, a major fundraiser for the 1st Kilmore Scout Group, gathers together antique dealers come from New South Wales, South Australia and all corners of Victoria under the same roof at Kilmore's Memorial Hall offering a wide range of items from many eras.

Montmorency Primary School Community Fair presents a fund day for the whole family with children's rides including the Panda inflatable obstacle course, bungy trampolines and a haunted house, while people of all ages can enjoy live music, market stalls, demonstrations and more.

St Margaret Mary's Primary School Fete mirrors the fun and vibrancy of Brunswick with fabulous multicultural food, live bands, dancing and a fashion parade with Fitzroy-based, Brunswick-found label, Queen Clothing. Along with varied food stalls, the day includes a silent auction.

St Cecilia's Primary School Fair, held in Glen iris, is a family orientated day for the whole family. With great rides, kids can also grab a showbag and enjoy face painting and crafts at the plaster fun house. There'll also be market stalls, gourmet food, afternoon teas and a bar on offer.

Cranbourne Primary School Carnival is a fair with a fantastic community atmosphere and a great fun day out for the whole family. Entertainment on the day includes rides, showbags, live music and children's performers, a silent auction and stalls offering gourmet food, plants and more.

Wattle Hill Kindergarten Children's Festival, taking place in Burwood, is a wonderful community event that offers fun for the whole family. With an animal farm, jumping castle, face painting and more for children, the day also includes entertainment, a BBQ and second hand goods for sale.

Old Fashioned Spring Fete, presented by the Anglican Parish of Box Hill, offers wonderful cakes, sweets, jams and pickles, all at great old-fashioned prices. With activities and giveaways for kids, the fete includes stalls with handcrafted items, bargain books, collectibles, toys and more.
