Newsletter | #234 | What's On this Week |
Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, June 28 to July 4.
This week... The School Holidays roll around with a shindig or two with the Burundian Independence Day Celebrations in Dandenong offering a day of drumming performances, music and food. Two of the big events for kids return for another year with the ever popular Fun4Kids Children's Festival in Warrnambool and the Melbourne Magic Festival in Northcote.
Speaking of magic, there's been the odd bit of sleight of hand in my own abode. Those familiar with past rants I've made concerning my ongoing struggle with lawn maintenance mightn't be surprised to know that the war wages on - albeit very sluggishly, I must confess.
The aforementioned sleight of hand concerns grass of an average height of 15 centimetres (I measure it, too and did the math) and hedge clippings which have now been magically whisked out of sight, crammed discretely into every ravenous nook and cranny available throughout the most awkward garden I've ever known. Truly, it's a disappearing act that'd make Doctor Who's Tardis turn red with shame.
With yet another inspection due any day now, should the Real Estate Agent find herself appalled by such trickery, I'll gladly point out to her each and every angle where she can stand and breathe in the dewy scent of freshly cut grass and have not a trace of hedge clippings invade the view partaken by her calculating, money-driven eyes.
I will then also gladly point out that "keeping up appearances"is the order of the day and that I have acted very much in line with her own dubious philosophy, something I learned while she had the audacity to stand there before me, explaining to a builder that the carport which could come crashing down at any unforseen moment doesn't need to be fixed "legally"- even after he'd pointed out to her the dangers that it poses to myself, my son, my girlfriend and her own children when visiting here.
Hedge clippings and long grass, were they to somehow fall upon the head of someone, are not known to inspire an outcome that at worst can result in lifetime paralysis or death. A lumbering monstrosity of a carport that creaks each time the wind blows and has been steadily declining since it was first torn apart in a gale last year in November, however, could quite possibly do such a thing.
So, by all means, should the surreptitious nature of my disposal of gardening waste offend her, I'll invite her to discuss matters in a civilised manner. I might also suggest we meet under the carport on a blustering, windy day.
It may not be safe, but I can assure her I've made every effort to be certain that the lawns will look nice from there.
