Newsletter | #236 | What's On this Week |
Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, July 12 to 18.
This week... Melbourne tips its hat, as it so rightly often does, to the plethora of cultural indulgences at hand in our fair city. With Emerge Festival rolling out the multi-coloured carpet at Dandenong's Drum Theatre, there's also the Indonesian Food and Trade Festival in Box Hill offering a range of food, performances and activities. Footscray will also host ColourFest, the first short film festival devoted to film makers of many backgrounds.
Those of a more sombre persuasion, or perhaps simply over the noise, flash and colour of School Holidays, can head along to the Crime & Justice Festival in Abbotsford for a program of seminars and events showcasing the art of crime and mystery writing.
Those attending could possibly use their newly acquired detective skills to enlighten me about a mystery I'm plagued with myself... that of why a family visit during holidays should only complicate matters when keeping the kids entertained. You'd think that the more kids there are, the more easily amused they'd be amongst themselves. Such foolery!
I feel like Hercules battling the dreaded Hydra, where just when I've figured out what will keep one head happy, another rears up demanding satisfaction. It couldn't be simple enough for all the heads to just watch the same DVD and be happy, could it. They all agree on one thing at least, and that's that each head is hungry.

Never Look A Guest Horse In The Mouth...
When the Olympics were first held in Australia, hosted by Melbourne in 1956, there were several world firsts that occurred that year and entered Olympic History. One of the more peculiar of these was that for the first time in the Games' hundred year existence, the unity of time and place, which is stipulated by the Olympic Charter, could not been observed.
Due to quarantine issues that caused problems with horses entering Australia, the Equestrian sports of that year's Olympics saw the Games take place in two different cities (Stockholm and Melbourne), in two different countries (Sweden and Australia), on two different continents (Europe and Oceania) and also in two different seasons (June and November).
