Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, February 14 to 20, 2012.
This week... if you fancy yourself as the adventurous type, it's the perfect time to pull a Phileas Fogg and travel around the city in 80 ways. Those who can brave the heights can do their best to land in Northcote for the Darebin Community and Kite Festival, while seafarers might find Echuca's Riverboats Music Festival more to their liking.
You can even clog your merry way to the Holland Festival at Sandown Racecourse for a celebration of all things Dutch or embrace one of Melbourne's most favoured means of travel with the Melbourne Bikefest.
There's also Blip Festival Australia with performances of electronic sampling, where you'll find many people simply shuffling.

Melbourne Bikefest returns with a bigger program that celebrates bikes as part of everyday life with a program of attractions and satellite events that incorporate the fun and philosophies of biking with fashion, film, workshops, social events, competitions and much more.

Timor Leste Culture & Food Festival, held at Queen Victoria Market, brings together entertainers, artists and the Timorese Community to celebrate the richness of their culture with a free event that features live music, traditional dances, arts and crafts and fantastic food.

Film Festivals
Transitions Film Festival, held at State Library of Victoria, presents ground-breaking documentaries about our global culture in transition towards a sustainable future. With topics that include future energy, sustainable economics and more, there'll also be forums, guest speakers and more.

Music & Arts Festivals
Blip Festival Australia, here in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, is a celebration of chipmusic, a style that draws on samples from retro games and computers. Held at Fitzroy's Evelyn Hotel, artists appearing include Bit Shifter, Nullsleep and guest performer from Europe.

Riverboats Music Festival sees the town of Echuca come to life with a great series of jazz performances along the Murray River and various venues, along with art exhibitions, family activities and also special dining events and a market celebrating the food and wine of the region.

Herring Island Summer Arts Festival offers exhibitions every weekend at the Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park in Toorak. Accessible by boat with a punt service, the arts festival includes special artists' demonstrations, talks, workshops, activities and more.

Olivetti, held at Melbourne's Design Institute of Australia, is a showcase of nine 20th century classics designed by the iconic typewriter manufacturer. Capturing a charm that precedes commonplace word processors, the exhibition will appeal to design lovers and nostalgists.

Wall of Seahorsel, held at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Fitzroy, is a new series of works by New Zealand's Yvonne Todd. Curated by Serena Bentley, Todd's works feature the costumed inhabitants of an imagined community who connect through dance moves.

This Is The Show, held at South Yarra's Mossgreen Gallery, is an exhibition of works by Rennie Ellis. A photographer and author, his images and words have titillated and tickled the public's imagination for years, leaving behind a treasure trove of images spanning over three decades.

WildArt, held at Seymour's Old Post Office Gallery, is a group show of wildlife paintings and sculpture featuring the works of acclaimed award winning Australian Artists. With various mediums used, artists include Tony Pridham, Paul Margocsy, Pamela Conder and others.

Paradisaea Papuana, held at Melbourne's Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, is an exhibition of traditional and contemporary art from West Papua and Papua New Guinea. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse of the material expression of indigenous cosmology inspired by flora and fauna.

Melbourne Watercolour Show, showing at Glen Eira City Council Gallery in Caulfield, is a major watercolour exhibition showcasing the diversity of approaches to the watercolour medium. Presented by Without Pier Galleries, artists include Guy Troughton, Annie White and JA Taranto.

Unrequited, showing at Port Melbourne's MARS Gallery, is a sculpture by Jane Valentine, one of Australia's pre-eminent marble sculptors. An installation in marble of a wing which has been separated from the body of an angel, her new work captures fragile elements of love and pain.

Tamworth Textile Triennial, held at Melbourne's RMIT Gallery, showcases a range of textile skills that challenge traditional ideas of the craft - from resist printed textiles to hand embroidered cross-stitch, metal wire knitted on a machine to cloth woven on a jacquard loom.

Artist Floor Talk: March 22 - Bookings Required
Earth's Shadow, held at Melbourne's fortyfivedownstairs, is an exhibition of works by Jean Lyons. Using the Golden Mean theory and Fibonacci number sequences, thin washes of black and white oil paint juxtapose disparate objects representing elements of earth, fire, water, air and space.
When: February 7 to 18 - Tuesdays to Saturdays
Studio 12, a collective of Mornington Peninsula award winning artists, will present contemporary and traditional works at The Well in Camberwell. With artists demonstrating daily, some proceeds from the show will help support Biala Early Childhood Intervention Centre.

objets de desir, held at Langford 120 in North Melbourne, is an exhibition of works by Jan Murray, who has focused on certain relationships between painting and its internal and external architecture by using the creation and installation of plaster simulacra of paintings.

Variety is the Spice of Life, presented at Montsalvat in Eltham, is an exhibition of works by Cliff Howard, whose works focus on colour across a variety of subjects that include representations of musicians and dancers, complementing these with works on the animal kingdom.

Artist Talks: Saturdays, February 4, 11 & 18 - 1pm to 3pm
Strandbeest, presented at Federation Square, brings to Melbourne the talents of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, whose kinetic 'artificial life' sculptures will be publicly displayed for a limited time. Fusing art and engineering, Jansen creates giant, self-propelling sculptural creatures.

Swarm Series, held at Fitzroy North's red gallery, is an exhibition by Jess Hall. Inspired by her 'specimen collections', Jess Hall's paintings combine studies from life with invented hybrids, referencing scientific illustration and collection in a series of paintings and works on paper.

The Seed, presented by Melbourne Theatre Company, is a witty and raw examination of family ties as it follows Rose, a writer who observes the reunion between her father and estranged grandfather. Featuring Sara Gleeson and Tony Martin, it's held at the Arts Centre.

The Wild Duck, held at Southbank's Malthouse Theatre, is a taut, stripped-back rendition of Isben's modern classic with its characters cast into the contemporary world. A bittersweet portrait of family dysfunction, deception and denial, The Wild Duck resounds for a new age.

Women of Letters, held at Thornbury Theatre, brings together talented women that include Georgia Fields, Wendy Harmer, Meow Meow and Amanda Palmer in a celebration of the beautiful lost art of letter-writing as they each pen 'A Letter To The Person Who Told Me The Truth'.

Bad Blood Blues, presented by Manilla Street Productions and held at Prahran's Chapel Off Chapel, is a s powerfully intense and totally engrossing new play present set in Africa as it deals with AIDS drug trials and the sexual moral maze between medical researcher and student.

Two By Two, presented by Little Ones Theatre, is a unique twist on the Biblical story set in a Melbourne of the near future where mass flooding finds a couple and a sick woman who have been denied passage on an Ark. Performances are held at fortyfivedownstairs.

Yes, Prime Minister, held at Melbourne's Comedy Theatre, is the live comedy from the original writers of the hit BBC TV series. Set in present day, in the oak panelled drawing room of the British Prime Minister's country residence, the play offers an engagingly funny look at politics.

A Chorus Line, held at Her Majesty's Theatre, is the hit show that celebrates the unsung heroes of the American Musical Theatre, the chorus dancers. The production is a brilliantly complex fusion of dance, memorable songs and compellingly authentic drama.

Good People, presented by St Kilda's Red Stitch Theatre, is the Australian premiere of the latest play from Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire. Set in South Boston, the play ponders the fate of those who move forward and those left behind through personal choice and destiny.

Tribes, presented by Melbourne Theatre Company, is Nina Raine's sharp-jabbing comedy that looks at how families communicate. As the conversation unfolds around a family table with arguments and insults, no one pays much attention to the damage it might cause.

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, presented by Melbourne Theatre Company at the Arts Centre, is Ray Lawler's classic Australian play that tells the story of Roo and Barney, whose tradition of spending their layoff from the cane-cutting season in Melbourne meets with unwanted change.

Shakespeare Under The Stars presents Glenn Elston's brilliantly funny new adaptation, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' Behind The Scenes. Held in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens, the hilarious production showcases Shakespeare's best known scenes with a special comic twist.

Russian Rhapsody is a free concert at Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Featuring Simon Hewett as conductor and soprano Antoinette Halloran, the program focusses on two greats of Russian Romanticism, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky.

David Jones, winner of 2010's Melbourne Prize for Music, will perform at Melbourne Recital Centre where he'll showcase his artistry in an intimate concert drawing on his experiences travelling to the East, combining Eastern metaphysics, sacred rhythms and mesmerising drumming.

The Sexual Awakening of Virginia Poppycock, held at The Butterfly Club in South Melbourne, is a Comedy Cabaret with a touch of Burlesque as Elena Gabrielle portrays Virginia Poppycock, a 26 year old who's as obsessed about sex as she is about Paris, despite being a virgin.

South Side Show explodes onstage with death defying aerial performances at Red Bennies in South Yarra, while stunning acts of acrobatics, juggling and clowning roam across the stage and around the entire venue, unique for its high ceiling, making it perfect for such thrills.

Checkpoint Charlie Comedy, one of Melbourne's newest comedy rooms located at Eurotrash Bar, warms you up with some of Melbourne's most exciting new up-and-comers before testing your continence with some of Australia's best known established comedians.

Box Hill Miniature Steam Railway Society, a group of Miniature Steam Railway enthusiasts, will be conducting a public run of their pride and joy, offering a chance for children to ride their wonderful miniature railway along a track through the picturesque surrounds of Elgar Park.

The bionic ear was invented in Melbourne by a team at Melbourne University led by Professor Graeme Clark in 1978.
Research for the invention was funded by the Victorian public through a series of 'telethons' on the then TV Channel 0. Because scientists didn't believe the bionic ear was possible, research funds couldn't be obtained from government granting bodies.
