North East Art Trail

North East Art Trail

Victoria's North East Art Trail takes in silos and art exhibitions in an area covering some of Victoria's favourite towns.

Take a road of discovery on the North East Art Trail, where you will experience art like you haven't before.

The trail can be completed in roughly 2 hours, or stay a while, look around, grab a bit to eat, meet the locals, maybe stay the night.

Your journey of discovery begins now...

Follow the North East Victoria Silo Art Trail, linking together small towns and the Winton Wetlands.

1. Benalla
The silo art trail begins at Benalla, 200 kms north east of Melbourne. There are no silos in Benalla, but it does have many murals and amazing street art pieces all over the town.

Benalla's buildings provide an ever-changing canvas for artists and has Benalla Art Gallery, an old Heritage Trail, a botanic garden and the peaceful Lake Benalla (where, if you're lucky, you might spot a platypus).

2. Goorambat
Goorambat is 16 kms north of Benalla. The grain silos feature three works by Jimmy Dvate. Milli, the Barking Owl was painted in 2018 with the hope of bringing attention to her status as an endangered species.

'Adnate' has painted 'Sophia', his depiction of the female aspect of the Holy Trinity on the wall of the Uniting Church.

Clem, Sam and Banjo, the Clydesdale Horses, were painted in 2019.

3. Devenish
13 kms north of Goorambat are the silos of Devenish, where Cam Scale's three towering murals pay homage to local community involvement in military service.

Painted in 2018 and 2019 they pay tribute to the men and women from this small community who enlisted in World War I, and honour those who never returned.

4. St James
From Devenish head north for a further 8 kms to St James. A collection of four murals on the St James silos were painted by Tim Bowtel.

Artist Tim Bowtell has dedicated his mural to Sir George Coles, a St James local who founded Coles supermarkets.

5. Tungamah
Tungamah, 15 kms north of St James. The Tungamah murals were created by Sobrane and show kookaburras, brolgas and other native Australian birds. Since Lindsay's photo was taken more birds have been added including my favourite, the galah.

Sobrane Simcock was the first Australian female street artist to participate in the silo project, painting dancing Brolgas and a Kookaburra onto the privately owned Tungamah Silos in 2018.

6. Winton Wetlands
Finish your journey along the North East Victoria Silo Art Trail in the Winton Wetlands, where Guido van Helten painted portraits of three local Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteers on a water tank in 2017. The tank can be found along the self-drive Art Trail within the wetlands, featuring works such as 'Martins Barge' and the famous 'Fish Trees'.
