Palace Nightclub on Fire |
Firefighters are battling a blaze at the former Palace nightclub in St Kilda amid fears it could spread to the neighbouring historic Palais Theatre.
More than 20 fire engines are at the scene and police have cordoned off the perimeter off the Palace complex and and Palais theatre.
Michael Walker, assistant chief fire officer at the scene, said crews couldn't say what had started the fire.
When asked if the fire appeared suspicious, Mr Walker said it was too early to tell.
"The fire investigation analysis team is investigating, along with the arson squad,"he told The Age.
It appears the years of alcohol-soaked flooring at the iconic rock venue, famous for its sticky carpets, may be adding fuel to the fire.
"Rolled-up carpets and chipboard is fuelling the fire,"Mr Walker said.
