Paul Mercurio

Paul Mercurio

One of our favourite Melburnians is Paul Mercurio, star of the fabulous film Strictly Ballroom.

Paul was born on 31 March 1963 in Swan Hill. He began ballet at 9 and was Principal Dancer with the Sydney Dance Company by 19, a position he held for ten years. He still teaches full time at Dance World Studios in Melbourne, Australia

As an actor IMDB filmography credits him with over 20 appearances on screen, stage and television including a AFI nomination as Best Actor in a Lead Role for Strictly Ballroom (1992). Best remembered for his lead role as rebel "Scott Hastings"in Baz Luhrmann's movie Strictly Ballroom.

In an inexplicable move, he was axed as a judge from TV show Dancing With the Stars where he had been a judge for 7 seasons (62 episodes, 2004-2007). He was well liked on the show and his comments always tasteful and relevant so it came as a shock.

In typical fashion, he moved on quickly and turned his attention to another of his passions - food. His TV show Mercurio's Menu differs from other cooking shows because destinations share the spotlight with regional cuisines.

Is Paul Mercurio Gus Mercurio's son? Yes, his father is character actor Gus Mercurio.
