Prahran Market |
Prahran Market, Melbourne's oldest produce market is one of Melbourne's premier shopping attractions for the best quality produce and friendliest service in Melbourne.
Prahran Market originated in 1864, but it wasn't until 1891 that the present facade was built. After the First World War (1914 -1918), the Market had become too small, so in 1923, it was enlarged with extra sheds and stables.
All day, cart horses stomped in the stables and their smells added to the odours of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry. The Salvation Army would also make a regular practice of marching up and down the Market aisles, playing music as they went.
In the 1960's, the trend of self service within retail shopping swept Australia. Despite this trend, Prahran Market retained the tradition of offering friendly personalised service.
Prahran Market has survived the depressions of 1890, and 1930, both World Wars, a major fire in 1950, and the flood of 1970. The future of the Market is now assured due to its reputation for having the best quality produce in Australia.
