Teens Josh and Mia Ray discover a fun hotel makes a visit to Melbourne even more enticing

We were five and seven the first time we stayed in a hotel and discovered pillow menus, room service and the complete lack of parental rules when it comes to breakfast buffets. Since then we've learnt a whole lot more, including to shut your doors in Bali or monkeys will invade your room, steal all the snacks, swim in the pool and have sex on the daybed.

It helps that our mum is a travel editor so we've also been told chocolate brown decor and teacups made for ants are the worst and a good minibar and lighting are the best.

Fast forward 11 years and we're off to the Melbourne Comedy Festival and staying at the Quincy Hotel Melbourne, a place so new that no one else has ever slept in our very comfy beds. When we arrive we meet Andrew, the dude at the front desk and the best hotel guy we've met. He's friendly and funny, and every day wears a new colourful jacket and shirt combo. He's full of good suggestions for stuff to do around the city.

The lifts are cool - they look like they've been graffitied. The rooms are decorated in shades of pink with timber floors and touches of green (Mum declares them "memorable" because they're not the usual predictable neutrals she normally sees in a hotel).

When we first stayed in a hotel we thought the miniature bathroom products were cute, but now we know to use less plastic so it's good to see the delicioussmelling shampoo, conditioner and body wash in large refillable containers. The toilet paper is the brand Who Gives a Crap so that gets an eco-tick , too.

The TV is great because it has free movies, plus Chromecast so we connect our laptops and log into our own Netflix and Binge accounts. Other things we like: the in-room tech- including the light switches and compendium - is very easy to use; the phone has smart buttons like "outside world" and "anything" to make it fast and easy to get what we want; the room service menu doesn't have burgers so we get delicious chicken katsu sambos instead.

We hang out on level 28 where there's a pool, gym and bar. Mum and Dad love it for a pre-dinner or late-night drink and snack.

We've decided we'll make visiting the Comedy Festival an annual event and we'll definitely stay here again.

Room rates start at $250 per night.
