Rugby World Cup 2027 - Melbourne

Australia confirmed as Rugby World Cup hosts in 2027 and 2029

Australia has previously hosted the 1987 Rugby World Cup together with New Zealand, as well as the 2003 Rugby World Cup on its own.

In a landmark moment for the game, Australia was confirmed in Dublin as the host of the men's World Cup in 2027 but the country will also host the 2029 women's World Cup.

Hosting the 2027 Rugby World Cup final at the MCG rather than in the sport's traditional heartland of Sydney would turbocharge growth and interest in the game and could help transform the finances of the sport, Victorian rugby chiefs say.

With the decision to award Australia hosting rights announced in Europe last night, cities and venues are jostling to host the big games.

Three venues - Stadium Australia in Sydney, Optus Stadium in Perth and the MCG - tick all the boxes for size and capacity and the final will be played in one of them.

Sydney is the game's heartland, but, as Victorian officials argue, if the Australian Rugby Union and World Rugby want to grow the game, the MCG is an obvious choice.

The Victorian government has backed the push for the final to be held in Melbourne, with Sports Minister Martin Pakula this week saying : " We've strongly advocated that in our discussions with Rugby Australia and the Rugby World Cup.''

Melbourne Rebels chairman Paul Docherty said hosting a game like the final could take rugby to the next level. " We believe the growth of the sport is in places that are not necessarily the traditional ones,'' he said.
