Shepparton 3630

Greater Shepparton city is a municipality formed on 18 November, 1994, by the union of Shepparton city, most of Rodney shire and parts of Euroa, Goulburn, Tungamah, Violet Town and Waranga Shires. Shepparton is in the centre of the shire, which has an area of 2,427 sq. km.

Apart from Shepparton, the municipality contains the townships of Dookie, Kialla West, Mooroopna, Murchison and Tatura. The city also contains the irrigated Goulburn Valley farm areas renowned for stone fruit and dairying.

The notion of Greater Shepparton was promoted by the former Shepparton and Rodney Councils at least as early as the mid 1960s in an endeavour to attract commercial investment to the region.

The Greater Shepparton area has three statistical divisions. The median income of residents of 15 years of age or more in those divisions in 1996 ranged from $256 to $271 a week; slightly higher than the figure for the Goulburn region ($262), but less than the Victorian median ($290). Greater Shepparton's census population in 1996 was 51,902 persons.
