Signs Signs Everywhere Signs

Signs Signs Everywhere Signs

Signs Signs Everywhere Signs went the song...

It was with delight (and some pride) that I asked my 10 year old son to look up out the left side window of the car so he could see one of the most marvellous signs in Melbourne, the Skipping Girl in Victoria Street, Richmond.

Is it a coincidence that three of Melbourne's most iconic signs are all located in the one suburb.. Richmond.. working class Richmond..

--> Nylex Clock

Pelaco

It's one of those signs that we all know, tend to take a passing glance but few of us remain looking at it for long. This particular sign is part of my life as my parents both worked at Pelaco, and I clearly remember my father pointing out the sign saying that's where he worked.

The sign was manufactured in 1939 by Claude Neon for Pelaco, an Australian clothing manufacturer best known for its men's shirts. The Pelaco sign over its former factory in Richmond is a Heritage Victoria listed landmark.

Honourable mention

Dimmey's Clock

Dimmeys Store and Clock Tower located ay 140-160 Swan Street, Cremorne was built and opened in 1907. Dimmey's Clock features a globe on top of the tower, originally clad with ruby glass and replaced in 1939 with copper.

Dimmey's Clock features letters that spell Dimmeys Stores.
