Owners Peter Behrendorf and Sophia Prentice opened their hip Carlton restaurant just over two years ago - with what has evolved into a warm and intimate restaurant where the right mix of formal, informal and lavish food and service provide for the right space for a get-together for two or twenty. Originally a bar-only venue, Sippers gradually began to introduce a tapas style menu that has been a huge success.
The entrance used to be the main Sippers space, now serving as a pre dinner drinks area before venturing up the narrow staircase into the main dining room.
Opulence without the arrogance should be Sippers' slogan. Ruby red walls and tarnished golden-framed mirrors add to the rich character of the place. Diners can sit in front of the fireplace or opt for wooden tables, some linen clad, some not.
The main dining room upstairs can be hired out for functions and is a great space for groups. Regular wine tastings and beer appreciation courses are housed here, as well as poetry and philosophy readings and the monthly speed dating.
Best value is the range of three banquets starting at $28 a head for the Savoury Banquet, $32 for the Sippers Banquet and $36 for the Deluxe Banquet. Let Chef Joel Crowther dazzle your tastebuds with a wide selection of gourmet tapas to share.
Alternatively, choose from the à la carte menu of tapas. Don't leave Sippers without trying the saffron and potato tortilla with dill and lemon dressing ($9); sauteed tiger prawns with dried chili and garlic on saffron rice ($12); mussels, pippies and chorizo in a tomato white wine broth ($13); and the Sippers mini paella ($12) is definitely mini but infused with great flavours.
Over the year since my last visit to Sippers, the tapas selection has grown and is and is definitely a gastronomic delight, but the portion size seems a tad too small for the price listed. Instead visit on any given Tuesday or Wednesday night where all tapas are $8 each.
Sippers boasts a rather extensive list of wine by the glass or bottle and beer on tap - the perfect accompaniment to your splurge of midweek tapas! Salut!
