South East Melbourne Phoenix |
The National Basketball League (NBL) newest team, South East Melbourne Phoenix will play their home games at John Cain Arena starting from the 2019-20 NBL season.
South East Melbourne Phoenix unveiled its striking 'fireball' logo and green colour scheme in November 2018.
Its logo, which consists of spinning flames and feathers combined in a ball, conveys a sense of speed, action and perpetual motion, what the club wants to represent on and off the court.
The laser green is for the picturesque landscape of the south east, symbolising Phoenix as cutting edge and focused on the future.
'( It) represents the rebirth of basketball in South East Melbourne,' Phoenix general manager Tommy Greer said. 'Basketball has a proud heritage in South East Melbourne, having produced some of Australia's greatest players and teams.'
NBL chief Jeremy Loeliger said the region boasted a 'rich history' in elite and community basketball.
'The time is right for the introduction of a second team in Melbourne and to rebuild the NBL rivalries that the city was known for in the 1980s and '90s,' he said.
The Phoenix will be headquartered at the State Basketball Centre
