There are two statues of Charles La Trobe in Melbourne, this one by Peter Corlett @ State Library of Victoria and Charles La Trobe by Charles Robb at La Trobe University in Bundoora.
Charles Joseph La Trobe, Superintendent of the Port Phillip District and later as the first Lieutenant-Governor of the colony of Victoria.
Charles La Trobe held office from 1839 to 1854, helping to establish the Royal Botanic Gardens, State Library, Museum of Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria and University of Melbourne.

The C J La Trobe Society Inc. raised the funds to erect the statue on the forecourt of the State Library Victoria.
The sculpture was commissioned with Peter Corlett OAM and unveiled by our patron the then Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser AC in November 2006 during the Year of La Trobe.
