Footscray Milking Station

THIS corner milk bar turned hip cafe won instant local love with its smart, cheffy cafe menu, right-on Padre coffee - and the cute Mexican Jarritos sodas in the fridge. 35 Bunbury Street, Footscray, 9029 9240.

The Pint of Milk

OLD milk bar, suburban corner. Coffee from city roaster Gridlock, bread from Crumbs, American milk bottles from eBay. There's even mixed lollies on the counter. 19 North Road, Newport, 9391 6641.

Roller Door

NOT just backstreet - this cafe is set up in someone's back garage. It pleases North Melbourne locals and commuters with smooth Coffee Supreme brews and bites such as the Crazy Tiger - a Vegemite and cheese toastie.
