The Banshees Of Inisherin

The Banshees Of Inisherin

RATING (* * * - 2022 ‧ Drama/Comedy ‧ 1h 54m)

Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship with alarming consequences for both of them.

Two men walk into a pub, not speaking. Colm (Brendan Gleeson) is of an age where, if he is to leave a musical legacy commensurate with his longstanding talent, he has to focus on his work; his decades of pub banter with Padraic are over. Padraic (Colin Farrell) is dumped and heartbroken. Martin McDonagh sets his delicate but potent fable - which, like most of his celebrated work, has a gory, Gothic edge - on a fictitious Aran island in 1923, when war was raging on the Irish mainland. The rift between the two men is a metaphor for that larger conflict.

The film toggles masterfully between comedy and tragedy; realism and fable. It manages to be both of the moment and completely timeless.

I'd almost call this a horror film

It's a gut punch of a comic-drama that keeps finding new ways to land hard-hitting body blows and it's easily one of the year's very best films.
