The Yarra Hotel

The Yarra Hotel

Depending how you look at it, we are either one year or 160 years old. We took over the joint in September 2012 and spent six months trying to find the old pub that was underneath there somewhere.. and when we finally did, weren't we ecstatic!

It's a ripper! The beer garden can be seen from the moon and the side bar/dining area (The J.P. Saunders Room) is an absolute haven when intimacy is what you require.

We've got a fantastic new Fish & Burger Kitchen and we are currently developing a new menu that we feel is going to provide something really different and original - a modern pub version of a fish 'n' chip shop (don't worry, it still includes some old faves!). It is open until 9.30pm most nights and open for lunch Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Yarra is perfect for parties and we're here to help you with your special event. The function menu is a fine thing indeed and can be tailored to suit your budget and party size. Just ask our friendly staff at the bar.

The Yarra Hotel is situated approximately 4km from the Melbourne CBD.

It was built in 1855 and from 1855-1864 known as Mackay's Hotel or Mackay's Family Hotel or Mackay's Inn. The first proprietor was Mrs Margaret Mackay. From 1864 it was renamed The Yarra Hotel. The Mahon family owned the Yarra in the 1960s (John Mahon played for Collingwood), John's father Jack Mahon was behind the bar.

In the 1970s the family of another Collingwood player, John Dellamarta, took over the pub. Marion & Con Trovato ran the Yarra from 1991-2012. Before Collingwood's first ever game in May 1892, players changed at the back of the hotel before jogging across Johnston Street to Victoria Park (built in 1879). This continued for a month while the grandstand was being built.
